Red Sox Game Notes for August 1
August 1, 2009 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Salem Red Sox News Release
Scoring First? Not So Much: Salem broke through with the game's first run the last two games for the first time since the Red Sox took an early lead against Lynchburg on July 19. After scoring first only 22 times in 69 games in the first half, the Sox began the second half scoring the first run in 14 of the first 23 games. But the solid trend has slipped away over this 11 game stretch, in which the Sox have only scored first twice and have gone 3-8.
MLB Trade Deadline Felt in Salem: Around 3:15 PM on Friday, Red Sox pitcher Bryan Price, scheduled to start last night, was informed he had been included in a trade to the Cleve- land organization. Price joined pitchers Justin Masterson and Nick Hagadone in a package for Indians first-baseman/ catcher Victor Martinez. In 11 starts for Salem, Price went 1-6 with a 6.54 ERA. He made eight starts for Low-A Greenville to begin the year, going 3-2 with a 2.45 ERA. Replacing McKae on the hill, Dave McKae allowed one earned run in 5 innings.
Midsummer Blues: After winning two of the first three meet- ings of the season with Wilmington, the Blue Rocks have won 10 of the past 12 games against the Red Sox. Salem enters Saturday's contest without a win since last Friday, July 24. With six straight losses by a grand total of 11 runs runs, Sa- lem has had a string of frustrating narrow defeats. Each of the last five losses have been by a single run.
Sputtering Offense: Salem has scored just 15 runs in its last 7 games, all losses. On Wednesday, the Sox were blanked for the 12th time this season and third time since the break.
July Recap: Salem pitched to a 2.96 ERA in July, but struggled offensively late in the month to finish 12-16. Seth Garrison led the Red Sox with four wins and a 1.42 ERA in six starts, while Derrick Loop went six-for-six in save opportunities and did not allow a run in nine appearances. Daniel Nava hit .347 with 12 extra base hits in 20 games played in July, while Kris Negron played every game and hit .306. Salem's team ERA was second best to Wilmington (2.40) in the CL for July.
