Myrtle Beach blanked night after doubleheader sweep

Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - In the second game of Friday night's doubleheader, the Pelicans and Kinston Indians combined for three runs, all of them on the Myrtle Beach side. The K-Tribe needed just the opening inning to equal that total Saturday.

Kinston got the first five men aboard against Pelicans starter Richard Sullivan en route to a three-run first and a 5-0 victory over Myrtle Beach in front of 4,010 fans at BB&T Coastal Field.

Sullivan had dropped six straight starts and seven of his last eight entering game three of the four-game set, and his undoing came in the form of Kinston's offense in the first three innings. The Indians scored three in the first after getting the first five men on base, four of them via singles. Lucas Montero, Tim Fedroff and Lonnie Chisenhall all scored a run in the opening frame. The Indians added a run on a Fedroff RBI double in the second and another on a Roman Peña run-scoring single in the third. Sullivan (2-9), who has been victimized by low run support this year, saw that trend continue, exiting after five and two-thirds with no runs behind him. Kinston got another pair home in the ninth off Pelicans reliever Rudy Darrow to add to the lead.

Myrtle Beach's offense, which was shutout in Friday's doubleheader nightcap until Robert Marcial's walkoff homer in the bottom of the ninth, only mustered four hits. Kinston starter Alexander Perez exited the ballgame after getting a leadoff strikeout of Cole Miles in the first. Behind him, Bryce Stowell, Jonathan Holt and Chen-Chang Lee combined to shut out the Birds over the remaining eight and two-thirds. Stowell (2-5) picked up the win with three and two-thirds innings of work.

Tomorrow evening's series finale pits Myrtle Beach's Cole Rohrbough (4-6, 6.01) against Kinston's Paolo Espino (3-6, 3.26). Tickets for all Pelicans home games are available at the BB&T Coastal Field box office, by calling (843)918-6000 or by visiting the Tickets page at MyrtleBeachPelicans.com.
