Potomac Nationals News Release
POTOMAC NATIONALS (24-11, 61-41) VS. WINSTON-SALEM DASH (18-15, 56-45)
RHP Adam Carr (1-1, 4.71) vs. LHP Justin Edwards (2-2, 5.82)
August 1, 2009 -- 6:35 p.m. G. Richard Pfitzner Stadium - Woodbridge, Virginia Game #103/Home #49
TODAY: The Potomac Nationals can go for the series victory tonight in a battle of first-place ballclubs when they face the Winston-Salem Dash on a Saturday night from Woodbridge, VA beginning at 6:35 p.m. By winning the first two contests, Trent Jewett's club now leads the season series against the Dash 8-7 and only Lynchburg (9-8) has a winning record against the defending Mills Cup champions.
TODAY'S OPPOSING STARTER: LHP Justin Edwards, 21, was selected in the 3rd round by the Chicago White Sox in the 2006 First-Year Player Draft out of Olympia High School in Orlando, Florida. Edwards was 6-9 with a 5.79 ERA in 27G/21GS with Low-A Kannapolis in 2007 but missed all of the 2008 campaign when he underwent Tommy John Surgery. He began his comeback to the hill this year again with the Intimidators of the South Atlantic League and was 4-3 with a 3.80 ERA in eight starts including a seven inning shutout performance prior to his call-up to Winston-Salem in the third week of June. In his Carolina League debut on June 21 in Wilmington, Edwards held the Blue Rocks to just two earned runs on three hits in his 5.0 innings of work. In making that start, Edwards was the first left-hander to start a game for the Dash this season.
Edwards has alternated between effective and ineffective outings since joining the Dash rotation. Following the success from his debut, he touched for eight runs (five earned) on seven hits including four home runs against the P-Nats on June 28. His performance after that was nearly flawless as the left-hander surrendered just a run on four hits in a victory over Lynchburg from City Stadium. Perhaps his best game yet took place in Salem when he baffled the Red Sox over a season-high 8.0 innings allowing just on run and not walking a single batter on July 16. His next start on July 22... he allowed five runs in four and two-thirds frames against the last-place Kinston Indians. So while it's hard to predict which Edwards will appear tonight against Potomac, the talented southpaw is 2-1 with a 3.28 ERA in his four starts on the road this season.
