Lynchburg Hillcats News Release

Lynchburg capitalized on five Frederick errors by scoring four unearned runs en route to a 6-2 victory over the Keys at City Stadium Saturday night. The Hillcats will go for a series win in the finale of the four-game set at 6:05 p.m. Sunday.

Frederick drew first blood with a run in the top of the second. Brandon Waring ripped a leadoff double off Cats starter Matt McSwain and advanced to third on Caleb Joseph's groundout. Tyler Henson drove in Waring with a sacrifice fly that gave the Keys a 1-0 advantage.

The Keys held the lead until the bottom of the fourth. Matt Hague singled to start the inning and advanced to second when Kent Sakamoto drew a walk from Frederick starter Zach Britton. Erik Huber grounded into a force out, which erased Sakamoto at second base and put Cats on the corners with one out. Eric Fryer followed with an RBI groundout that scored Hague from third and enabled Huber to take second.

The inning took a strange turn when Alex Presley hit a ground ball to Pedro Florimon near the second base bag. By the time he fielded the ball, Florimon realized he had no play on Presley and he elected to throw home as Huber was caught between third base and the plate. Joseph caught Florimon's throw and his subsequent throw to third hit Huber, who promptly raced home on the error.

Presley took second on the play and reached third when Britton delivered a wild pitch. Jose De Los Santos drove in Presley with and infield single. De Los Santos scored later in the inning when Billy Rowell dropped a routine fly ball off the bat of Chase d'Arnaud. Lynchburg scored four runs in the inning with the help of two Frederick errors.

The Cats scored another unearned run in the fifth. Jordy Mercer reached on a fielding error by Waring leading off the inning and reached second on a wild pitch. After Britton retired Hague, Sakamoto hit a ground ball to third that Waring misplayed for his second error of the inning, allowing Mercer to score and extend Lynchburg's lead to 5-1.

Lynchburg added to its lead in the sixth. De Los Santos reached on a bunt single off Frederick reliever Eddie Gamboa and went from first to third when Gamboa committed a throwing error - Frederick's fifth of the night - trying to retire the speedy De Los Santos. Gamboa issued a walk to d'Arnaud before inducing Josh Harrison to ground into a double play, which allowed De Los Santos to score from third and gave the Cats a 6-1 advantage.

Frederick scored a run in the eighth off Cats reliever Harrison Bishop when Waring hit an RBI double that scored Florimon to reduce the deficit to 6-2. But Moises Robles worked a scoreless ninth inning to preserve the Lynchburg win.

McSwain (9-6) allowed four hits and one earned run in six innings to pick up the win for Lynchburg. Britton (7-5) took the loss after allowing five runs, four of which were unearned.

Lynchburg will take on Frederick in the finale of the four-game series on Sunday night at City Stadium. First pitch is slated for 6:05 p.m.
