LAST TIME OUT: The Pelicans allowed a season-high five homers, including two from Nellie Rodriguez and back-to-back homers from Dorssys Paulino and Sicnarf Loopstok in a 10-4 loss to the Lynchburg Hillcats on Wednesday night...The Birds tallied at least four runs for the eighth time in nine games but suffered their first loss in nine contests...JONATHAN MARTINEZ allowed a career-high eight earned runs and 11 hits in four innings and suffered his first loss since April 22.

HOME RUN DERBY HILLCATS: A day after the Pelicans wrapped up a 12-0 win on Tuesday, including CAEL BROCKMEYER's first career grand slam, the Hillcats clobbered five home runs in their 10-4 win against the Birds last night. It was a season-high for homers allowed in a single game for Myrtle Beach and the first time Lynchburg had launched five homers in one contest since May 28, 2013. That matchup was also against the Pelicans at Calvin Falwell Field. Last night, Nellie Rodriguez hit a pair of homers in the game, and Pelicans starter JONATHAN MARTINEZ surrendered three overall. In the May 28 contest two seasons ago, Hillcats third baseman Kyle Kubitza and left fielder Robby Hefflinger each had two-homer games. Three came off of Pelicans starter VICTOR PAYANO, while the final two were hit off of WILL LAMB. Kubitza was traded to the Angels this season and spent 12 games with the big league club from June 10-28.

ME-OH-BROCK-MEYER: With a batting average under .200 in his first 4 games with the Pelicans, CAEL BROCKMEYER erupted for a monster night at the plate in the series finale against the Red Sox on Tuesday. With an RBI single in the first inning and then a fourth-inning grand slam, the Birds' backstop racked up a career-high 5 RBI as Myrtle Beach routed Salem, 12-0. Not only was it the first grand slam by a Pelicans player this year, it was a single-game team-high in RBI for the club. The four-run homer was a career first for Brockmeyer, and the first by a Pelicans player since RYAN CORDELL did so on August 30, 2014, against Lynchburg's Alex Wilson. The Pelicans hit 5 grand slams as a team last season, and hit a franchise-high 7 during the 2001 season.

GOOD AS GOLD: Right-hander JASVIR RAKKAR returned to the Pelicans roster on Tuesday as a gold medal champion with Team Canada at the Pan American Games in Toronto. The Pelicans hurler, whose 10 saves are tied for the third-most in the Carolina League, saw action in two games with Team Canada, combining for two shutout innings with four hits allowed and one strikeout. Team Canada rallied back in extra innings to beat Team USA in the gold medal game.

SHAKE AND BAKE: The Pelicans made five roster moves on Tuesday, as JEIMER CANDELARIO, JACOB ROGERS, and JUAN PANIAGUA were all promoted up to Double-A Tennessee, while JASON VOSLER joined the club and JASVIR RAKKAR returned. The Pelicans have made 71 moves this season. Myrtle Beach has had 48 different players on the roster (including rehabber CHRIS DENORFIA), only one shy of last season's total. The club has already surpassed the different number of pitchers with 26 different arms suiting up the club next to last year's total of 24. The trio of promoted players makes 13 promotions this year, 12 to Double-A and one to Triple-A, although C CAEL BROCKMEYER and LHP MICHAEL HEESCH have both returned to the Pelicans since call-ups.

OH, TO BE YOUNG AGAIN: CHESNY YOUNG collected a third-inning single last night, extending his on-base streak to 41 straight games, which is a league record for reaching safely in consecutive games. Winston-Salem's Carlos Sanchez (37 games, 2012) held the previous record. The minor league record is Andrew Velazquez, who reached safely 74 straight times for the South Bend Silver Hawks (then Arizona's Low-A affiliate) last year. Young is also riding an 11-game hit-streak, hitting .476 over the stretch, but did not win Carolina League Player of the Week, as Lynchburg's Clint Frazier took home the hardware on Monday. Both have active-league-leading 11-game hit-streaks.

WHAT A DIFFERENCE A DAY CAN MAKE: While the Pelicans still have the best ERA in the league during July, last night's offensive outburst for Lynchburg raised the Birds team ERA 41 points to 2.28 for the month and opponents' batting average 11 points to .216. Still, only thrice this month has a Pelicans starter allowed more than three earned runs, and on seven occasions, a Pelicans starter has finished his outing without allowing an earned run at all. For the first time since early July, the starters' ERA (2.35) is higher than the bullpen's (2.18) for the month.

BIRD FOOD: The Pelicans season-best 8-game win streak was snapped on Thursday...The team has still won 10 of their last 12...A homerless streak of 121 1/3 innings for the bullpen was snapped last night with consecutive home runs on back-to-back pitches from DAVID GARNER...The Pelicans have the second-worst record in the CL in games decided by two or fewer runs (18-25) and have dominated lopsided affairs (38-15 in 3 or more run margins, 1st in CL)...The Pelicans play a game on 19 straight days before an off day August 3...CHESNY YOUNG is hitting a Class A-Advanced best .476 (20-for-42) in his last 11 games, raising his average 26 points. Young also leads Cubs full-season minor leaguers with a .338 batting average and leads the league with a .348 average.

PROSPECT 8-PACK: Eight of players on the roster are ranked in the Cubs Top 30 prospects according to MLBPipeline.com's Prospect Watch and six in Baseball America's Top 30. RHPs PAUL BLACKBURN (No. 24 MLB.com/No. 18 Baseball America), JEREMY NULL (28/NR), DAURY TORREZ (22/30), JEN-HO TSENG (8/11), DUANE UNDERWOOD (6/10), catcher VICTOR CARATINI (16/13), 2B DANIEL LOCKHART (No. 29/NR), and OF MARK ZAGUNIS (15/15). Baseball America also lauded a handful of Pelicans players with "Best Tools" labels. Caratini is the "Best Defensive Catcher" in the system according to the 2015 Prospect Handbook, CARLOS PENALVER as the "Best Defensive Infielder," Tseng has the "Best Control" and "Best Changeup," Underwood possesses the "Best Fastball," and Zagunis has "Best Strike Zone Discipline." Outfielders BILLY MCKINNEY (9/6), JACOB HANNEMANN (21/17, and BA's "Fastest Baserunner,"), 3B JEIMER CANDELARIO (12/24), and JUAN PANIAGUA (top "Sleeper" prospect) were on the roster but have since been promoted. ANDREW ELY, named by BA as the "Best Defensive Player" from the Cubs 2014 draft class, was on the club's Opening Day roster but went down to South Bend.
