Frederick Keys News Release
FREDERICK, Md. -The Frederick Keys are excited announce that Ariel Miranda has been promoted to the Double-A Bowie Baysox. It is the left-hander's first call-up to the Eastern League. Miranda becomes the third member of the Keys to be promoted to Double-A this month, joining Johnny Ruettiger and Mikey O'Brien who were both called up on July 5. This season, 11 Keys players have moved up to either Double-A or Triple-A. In a corresponding move, O'Brien returns to the Keys after making four starts with the Baysox.
In five starts with the Keys, Miranda, 26, went 1-1 with a 4.09 ERA. In 22 innings he allowed 10 runs on 16 hits to go along with eight walks and 24 strikeouts. Opponents were hitting .200 against him, while left-handers were batting at just a .188 clip (3-for-16).
Named the Carolina League's "Pitcher of the Week" on Monday for July 13-19, Miranda went 1-0 over two starts with a 0.82 ERA (11IP/1R). Over that stretch, he gave up just five hits, walked two and struck out 13.
In his final Carolina League start on Sunday night against Potomac, the Cuban tossed six shutout innings of hitless baseball to pick up his first victory since joining the Orioles organization. Allowing only five baserunners all game, the southpaw walked two and struck out six, in his longest stateside outing. In the game, Miranda, Matt Taylor and Cody Wheeler combined on a one-hit shutout.
Promoted to Frederick from the GCL Orioles on June 28, Miranda was signed by Baltimore as a non-drafted free agent on May 23. Before joining the Orioles, he pitched seven professional seasons in the Cuban National Series, the country's top professional league. Beginning his pro career when he was just 17 years old, Miranda went 22-25 with a 3.78 ERA over 80 games (64 starts).
The Keys and Nationals play the middle game of three on Thursday night at Pfitzner Stadium. Right-hander David Hess (5-4, 4.44) makes the start for the Keys and will be opposed by Nationals righty Lucas Giolito (3-5, 2.83). First pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m and fans can listen to the broadcast on 1450 AM The Source and frederickkeys.com. The Keys return home on Saturday at 6:00 p.m, when the Winston-Salem Dash come to town. It is Christmas in July, and there will be a Zach Britton Bobblehead giveaway sponsored by Flying Dog Brewery. There will also be postgame fireworks. For tickets, fans can contact the Keys at 301-815-9939 or visit frederickkeys.com.
