White Sox Assign First-Rounder Fulmer to Dash
July 23, 2015 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (July 23, 2015) - The Chicago White Sox have announced that right-handed pitcher Carson Fulmer, the club's 2015 first-round pick, has been promoted to Winston-Salem from the Arizona League White Sox. Fulmer is slated to start Thursday's 7 p.m. game for the first-place Dash against the Carolina Mudcats at BB&T Ballpark.
The eighth overall selection out of Vanderbilt University, Fulmer signed with the White Sox on July 3 and made his professional debut on Saturday with the AZL White Sox. He worked around a hit and fanned one in a scoreless frame. Thursday will mark Fulmer's second professional appearance.
Fulmer is from Lakeland, Fla., the same hometown as former Dash star and White Sox All-Star left-hander Chris Sale. This season, Fulmer was named the National Pitcher of the Year, Southeastern Conference Pitcher of the Year and a first-team All-America after going 14-2 with a 1.83 ERA and 167 strikeouts in 127 2/3 innings as a junior. Fulmer was also one of four finalists for the Golden Spikes Award, awarded to the best amateur baseball player in the United States.
Originally drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the 15th round in 2012, Fulmer did not sign and chose to attend Vanderbilt. In his three-year career at Vanderbilt, Fulmer helped lead the school to its first-ever National Championship in 2014, with the Commodores finishing as the runner-up this season. Fulmer pitched in the championship-clincher a year ago before recording a win in Game 1 of this year's Finals.
Thursday's contest against the Atlanta Braves' Carolina League affiliate, the Carolina Mudcats, is a Thirsty Thursday, presented by Camel City Goods. Select beers will be available for just $1 through the seventh inning. Also, in honor of National Hot Dog Day, hot dogs will be available for just $1 until the end of the first inning.
