WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (July 23, 2015) - In his High-A debut, Carson Fulmer fires two scoreless innings, and Brian Clark followed with five frames of one-run ball to lead the Winston-Salem Dash to a 3-2 victory on Thursday over the Carolina Mudcats at BB&T Ballpark.
Fulmer ripped through a 1-2-3 first inning before working around a walk and double in a scoreless second. The right-hander threw 33 pitches and whiffed three in his High-A debut.
Carolina (14-14, 48-49) brought on reliever Carlos Salazar (0-1) after four innings of one-run ball from starter Andrew Thurman. At one-all, the inning began inconspicuously, with Jake Peter singling between a couple of outs. However, the Dash (16-11, 46-51) drew four consecutive walks, two from Salazar and two from new reliever Jorge Salavar, to push across two runs and grab the 3-1 advantage.
Clark (5-3) held it down from there, going five innings in relief of Fulmer. He worked around two hits and four walks to surrender only one run.
With the same score in the eighth, Keith Curcio singled, and Dustin Peterson walked with one out. An infield single by Jacob Schrader coupled with an error brought home a run to bring Carolina within 3-2. However, Dash reliever Andre Wheeler struck out Carlos Franco and got Tanner Krietemeyer to line out to escape the jam. Peter Tago stranded the bases loaded in the ninth for his team-leading eighth save of the season.
Winston-Salem dented the scoreboard first. Adam Engel walked and stole second against Thurman to begin the third. Peter then lifted a fly ball down the right field line. Mudcats right fielder Connor Lien caught the ball, Engel tagged and raced towards third, but Lien's throw sailed up the line and bounced into the stands, allowing Engel to score the game's first run.
The Mudcats fought back in the fifth. Joey Meneses singled to lead off and advanced to second on a fielder's choice. With two outs, Reed Harper crushed an RBI double to left-center to knot the score at one.
The Dash send Brandon Brennan (1-3, 4.09 ERA) to the mound in Friday's rubber match against Carolina's Blair Walters (5-3, 2.38 ERA). Pregame radio coverage is available at 6:45 p.m., with the first pitch at 7 p.m. on wsdash.com/broadcast and the TuneIn App.
Following Friday's game, all fans can enjoy a Fireworks Show, presented by Mast General Store. For tickets, call the Dash at (336) 714-2287 or visit wsdash.com.
