Payano Too Much as Frisco Edges San Antonio in Opener

San Antonio Missions News Release
A sensational outing from Victor Payano carried Frisco to a 3-0 win over San Antonio in Tuesday night's series opener at Wolff Stadium.
Tuesday night's tilt did not begin well for Missions' starter Fabio Castillo. The veteran right-hander walked leadoff man Luis Mendez and then allowed a single to Garrett Weber. After Lewis Brinson lined out to center for the first out, Castillo walked Ronald Guzman to load the bases. Castillo's problems grew as he plunked Alex Burg to score Mendez with the game's first run. Fortunately for the Missions, Castillo (2-4) did well to avoid further damage, retiring both Zach Cone and Preston Beck to end the rally.
Castillo rebounded nicely from the rocky start to settle into the contest. Over the next five innings, Castillo allowed just one more hit and no runs, while also fanning seven.
On most nights, Castillo's six-inning effort would have resulted in a victory, but not on Tuesday. Frisco southpaw Victor Payano came ready to pitch as well. The 23-year-old hurler fanned a career-high 13 in his six and two-thirds innings. Payano (3-0) threw 65 of his 90 pitches for strikes and allowed only four hits.
He was followed by righty Adam Parks, who fanned three more Missions in his inning and a third.
Frisco added a pair of insurance rans in the ninth off reliever Jason Jester.
Matt Bush (4th save) set San Antonio down in order in the bottom of the frame to cap the shutout. The 16 strikeouts were the most by a Missions' opponent in 2016 (previous high 12: both byTulsa in April).
San Antonio (9-16) resumes its four-game series Frisco (18-6) Wednesday on Military Appreciation Night presented by Dr Pepper. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM. Johnny Hellweg (1-3, 10.57) will take the hill for the Missions, while the 'Riders counter with fellow righty Reed Garrett (0-0, 3.09).
