Hooks Ride off with Split

Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
FRISCO - As badly as the series began with the Riders stealing two wins away from the Hooks, a split in Frisco sounds pretty appealing at the end of the day.
The Corpus Christi Hooks notched victories in back-to-back nights and earned a split in the four game series against the Frisco RoughRiders with an 8-2 victory on Monday night in front of 2,519 at Dr Pepper Ballpark.
The Hooks got going right out of the gate offensively. The first three batters drew two walks and one single setting the stage for Chase McDonald. He continued his offensive tear by hitting a single to center that plated two and a third came in due to a throwing error by Ryan Cordell. A Danry Vasquez RBI single later in the inning would score McDonald and give Corpus Christi a 4-0 lead.
The offense produced two more runs in the third inning. A walk to Derek Fisher and a double by J.D. Davis put two men in scoring position with one out against Frisco starter Sam Wolff. Danry Vasquez drove in his second RBI when he hit a fielder's choice ground-ball to first baseman Preston Beck. The throw was on target but catcher Chris Gimenez couldn't catch it cleanly enabling Fisher to score. Davis advanced to third on that play then came home immediately after on a sacrifice fly by Jack Mayfield to give the Hooks a 6-0 lead.
RoughRiders starter Sam Wolff (4-1) got roughed up for six runs (all earned), five hits, five walks, struck out just three, and took his first loss of the season.
Meanwhile, Hooks' starter Joe Musgrove (2-1) was pitching another gem on the mound. He went six strong, surrendering five hits, one walk, no runs, and striking out five on his way to getting the victory. He reduced his already low season ERA from 0.52 to 0.39 with the performance.
The Hooks added two more runs later on in the contest. A groundout by Fisher with the bases loaded enabled Alfredo Gonzalez to score and make it 7-0 in the sixth. In the ninth, Chase McDonald launched his sixth homer of the year over the left field fence to push Corpus Christi's lead to 8-1.
The Riders got two runs late in the game. Luis Mendez hit his first homer of the year in the eighth off of Hooks' lefty Michael Freeman to trim the deficit to six. An RBI-single by Beck in the bottom of the ninth scored Alex Burg and closed the scoring.
Michael Freeman pitched the final three innings in relief of Musgrove, giving up two earned runs, five hits, striking out two, and earning his first save of the season.
Corpus Christi is on to Midland for a four-game series looking to extend its winning streak to three. You can listen to Michael Coffin and Kevin Piel as they bring you all the action from Security Bank Ballpark. First pitch tomorrow is at 6:30 with the pregame show beginning around 6:10.
