PawSox Wilt after Solid Start

PAWTUCKET, R.I. - The Pawtucket Red Sox's ill fortunes continued Thursday night as they dropped the third contest of their 4-games series against the Norfolk Tides, 6-2 in front of an announced crowd of 4,039 at McCoy Stadium.
With the contest still scoreless in the home half of the fourth, Pawtucket Designated Hitter Mark Hamilton broke the silence when he unloaded on a 1-1 pitch from Josh Stinson and deposited it into the bleacher in right center to put the Pawsox ahead 1-0.
Pawtucket (59-53) handed the ball to southpaw Chris Hernandez who looked to conquer his home field demons (0-4, 7.36) and snap a string of five consecutive losing starts. Hernandez kept his team in the contest and induced double plays in the second and fourth innings to avoid trouble, but was not as fortunate in the fifth as the Tides' bats went to work.
Zelous Wheeler's double to left drove in Alex Liddi to even the score, 1-1. After a walk, Chris Snyder's double down the third base line plated both runs and gave the Tides a 3-1 lead. Hernandez departed after 4 1/3, allowing three runs on four hits, walking four and fanning two in a losing effort. Pawtucket righty Brock Huntzinger retired the next two hitters to end the inning.
Huntzinger threw 1 2/3 total and was followed by Alex Wilson, Ryan Rowland-Smith, and Chris Carpenter.
Tides' starter Josh Stinson kept Pawtucket's offense in check, allowing just Hamilton's homer over 5 2/3 innings of work, three hits, walked a pair, and struck out four for the win (6-5).
Pawtucket got a run back after catcher Dan Butler connected for a solo homer into the Pawsox bullpen off Norfolk lefty Chris Jones to begin the seventh, making it 3-2 Tides.
However, the Tides (57-55) got some valuable insurance in the ninth, thanks to Jonathan Schoop's mammoth home run off the scoreboard. After a double and a walk, Snyder drove in his 3rd and 4th runs of the night with a base hit up the middle, extending Norfolk's lead to four (6-2).
Former Red Sox reliever Manny Delcarmen threw a scoreless eighth and Adam Russell picked up the save.
Norfolk out-hit Pawtucket 9 to six. The Pawsox stranded seven baserunners, including two in the ninth. Two former PawSox; Norfolk Manager Ron Johnson and third baseman Danny Valencia were tossed after some choice words for the umpires in the fourth when the Tides failed to score in the fourth.
The rubber match of the four game series will take place tomorrow at 7:05.
Tomorrow will be Pawsox Cap Night at McCoy. The first 4,000 fans (14 and under) receive a complimentary Pawtucket Red Sox baseball cap. After the conclusion of the game, a Pawsox family sleepover will take place, as fans of all ages are invited to camp out in the McCoy Stadium outfield.
