Toledo Mud Hens News Release

The Hens opened the month of August with a narrow 2-1 loss at the hands of the International League-leading Durham Bulls Thursday night at Fifth Third Field.

The night started out in the Mud Hens' favor when Kevin Russo put the Hens on the board first in the second when he singled to center to score Bryan Holaday and give Toledo the early 1-0 lead.

After 5 1/3 scoreless innings, Jose Alvarez surrendered a run when Jason Bourgeois hit a soft single to center to score Tim Beckham and tie the game at 1-1. After loading the bases later in the inning, Durham's Chris Gimenez drew a walk to bring home the go-ahead run.

After the walk, Jeremy Bonderman came on in relief for Alvarez and stopped the bleeding by retiring two straight Bulls to end the inning and keep the deficit to one run. Bonderman's success as a Mud Hen continued as he pitched 2 2/3 innings of two-hit, shutout baseball to bump his scoreless appearance streak to seven games.

The Hens outhit Durham 9-5 in the effort, but a slew of great defense from the Bulls and untimely hitting left nine men on the basepaths for Toledo.

The Mud Hens will look to avoid the sweep in the final game of the series at 7:00 p.m. tomorrow at Fifth Third Field. RHP Shawn Hill is scheduled to make the start for Toledo.
