Louisville Bats News Release
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Pitching was not at a premium for the visitors on Thursday night at Louisville Slugger Field as the Syracuse Chiefs (51-60) shutout the Louisville Bats (55-59) 5-0. Syracuse now holds a 2-1 lead in the four-game series between the two clubs that concludes tomorrow night.
Danny Rosenbaum (W, 6-7) put together an outstanding outing on the mound, registering a quality start for Syracuse. He went 6.2 innings, scattering eight hits and allowing no runs while walking one and striking out six.
Despite out-hitting the Chiefs 8-7, the Bats couldn't string together enough to lift an offense that is currently last in the International League in runs scored. The Syracuse bullpen pitched a perfect 2.1 innings after Rosenbaum's departure to seal the shutout.
Both sides were quiet at the plate until the top of the third, when a Bats error would prove costly. Chiefs second baseman Josh Johnson led off the frame with just his third double of the season. After a fly out from Jhonatan Solano moved Johnson to third, a rare Kristopher Negron error allowed the first Syracuse run to cross the plate and give the Chiefs a 1-0 lead.
Another leadoff double from Syracuse for a second consecutive inning sparked what would be a three-run fourth for the Chiefs. Tyler Moore got the double to kick off the frame and came around to score two at-bats later on when Zach Walters reached on a fielder's choice. Solano notched two RBIs on a double later in the inning that scored Walters and Johnson, extending the Syracuse lead to 4-0.
Louisville starter Ryan Dennick (L, 0-1) gave way to reliever Jose Arredondo to start the fifth inning after four complete innings in just his third career Triple-A start. Dennick allowed four earned runs on four hits and a walk while striking out two.
Syracuse tacked on one more insurance run in the eighth when a wild pitch from Nick Christiani allowed Danny Espinosa to score and make the Chiefs' final tally 5-0.
Tomorrow night will mark the end of an eight-game homestand for Louisville. In the final game of the current four-game set, the Bats will send RHP Chad Reineke (8-9, 3.64) to the mound against Chiefs RHP Tanner Roark (9-3, 3.16). Friday night's game will also feature post-game fireworks and a 2013 Team Card Set Giveaway presented by Porter Paints.
