Durham Bulls News Release
Durham, NC - PawSox shortstop Ed Rogers hit a solo shot off of the bull in left field in the seventh inning to end the Bulls' winning streak at three and give the Red Sox a 2-1 win on Tuesday night at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
Bulls reliever Tony Peguero (0-1) worked a scoreless sixth inning, but could not preserve the 1-1 tie in the seventh, as Rogers' blast gave Pawtucket the 2-1 victory. Peguero replaced starter Jason Hammel, who had allowed a run, four hits, and two walks in five innings of work.
Pawtucket tied the game at one in the fifth inning. Right fielder Brandon Moss led the inning off with a double, third baseman Chad Spann followed with a walk, and second baseman Joe McEwing hit a single to load the bases. Hammel was able to strikeout Rogers, but center fielder David Murphy sent a line drive into center to bring home Moss. Hammel prevented further damage though, inducing first baseman Jeff Bailey to hit into a force out at home and designated hitter Luis Jimenez to ground out to third to end the inning.
The Bulls got on the board early when left fielder Chris Richard hit his second home run of the season to right center field. It turned out to be the only offense the Bulls could generate though, as Pawtucket starter Kason Gabbard (2-0) allowed just one run, five hits, and a walk while striking out six in six innings. Gabbard was followed by right-hander Edgar Martinez, who was perfect through the seventh and eighth innings.
Right-hander Travis Hughes entered in the ninth for Pawtucket and gave up a lead-off walk to designated-hitter Jorge Cantu but was able to shut the Bulls down to earn the save. First baseman Wes Bankston flew out, and third baseman Joel Guzman and catcher Shawn Riggans both struck out to end the game.
The Bulls and PawSox will meet again Wednesday afternoon at 1 PM at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park. For tickets, go to www.durhambulls.com or call the box office at (919) 956-BULL.
