Louisville Bats News Release
LOUISVILLE, KY-Columbus (2-3) was determined not to let a good pitching performance go to waste for the second night in a row. The Clippers had a no-hitter going into the ninth inning last night before Bats pinch hitter Aaron Herr doubled and later scored the game winning run on a walk-off single by Bubba Crosby. Tuesday night was a different story, as the Bats (4-2) struggled from the plate and Columbus did just enough to get the win. Attendance for tonight's game was 6,841.
Right fielder Jeff Bannon led the Bats tonight going 2-for-4 with a double. The Bats squandered two chances late with runners in scoring position that would have tied the game or given them the lead. With runners on second and third with two outs in the eighth, Joey Votto grounded out to the shortstop, ending the threat. The Bats had a chance again in the ninth when Dewayne Wise doubled down the right field line with two outs, however catcher Dan Conway struck out in the next at bat to end the game
Columbus did just enough offensively to get their second win of the season. Center fielder Brandon Watson tripled in the top of the eighth and later scored on a Tony Batista line drive to left field giving the Clippers the only run of the game. Batista's triple was his only hit in the game as he finished 1-for-4.
Louisville's pitching was impressive for the second consecutive game. LHP Bobby Livingston struck out five in 6.2 innings, allowing no runs. LHP Ricky Stone (0-1) picks up the loss for the Bats. Stone allowed three hits in 1.1 innings, including the game winning RBI by Batista.
Tim Redding (0-1) bounced back nicely for Columbus after allowing three earned runs on nine hits in a season opening loss to Indianapolis. Redding held the Bats to just three hits and did not surrender a run in 6.0 innings. He also struck out seven Louisville batters. Reliever Chris Schroder (1-0) gets the win, picking up where Redding left off, allowing no hits and zero runs in 1.1 innings of work. Former Bat Chris Booker saved the game for his second of the season.
Louisville will look to LHP Phil Dumatriat (1-0, 0,00) to continue the club's hot pitching versus Columbus Wednesday night at Louisville Slugger Field. Dumatrait earned the win in the Bats' 8-2 win over Toledo on April 6. Columbus LHP Chris Michalak (0-0) will try to give the Clippers back-to-back wins for the first time this season. Michalak started 22 games for Louisville last season posting a 9-5 record with a 2.99 ERA. Tomorrow night will mark the end of the Louisville's seven game season opening homestand. Game time is set for 7:05 p.m.
