Rochester Red Wings News Release
Kevin Slowey tossed six solid innings, and Matt Tolbert contributed a key two-run single to pace a 4-3 Red Wings win over the Norfolk Tides Tuesday night at Frontier Field. Slowey allowed a first inning unearned run to the Tides, with Ruddy Yan scoring on J. R. House's run-scoring hit. The Red Wings got right back in the game, with a second inning rally fueled by the first Triple-A hits by Matt Moses and Tolbert.
With two outs, Glenn Williams singled and Moses followed by stroking a 2-2 pitch to left field, breaking an 0-for-8 season-starting slump for Moses. Jose Morales knocked in Williams to tie the score, then Tolbert stepped in for his first Triple-A at-bat and singled, plating Morales and Moses. Denard Span followed with another run-scoring hit, the fifth consecutive hit with two outs to put Rochester up 4-1.
Slowey allowed just three hits - including a bunt single - and struck out two, without allowing a walk. Scott Baker relieved Slowey to start the seventh inning, and worked around what proved to be Norfolk's best offensive chance of the game.
Mike Cervanek led off the seventh with an infield single and advanced to second on a hit by Cesar Crespo. After Luis Montanez popped out to second baseman Tommy Watkins, Eider Torres loaded the bases with the third hit of the inning. Baker battled back with a strikeout and an easy ground ball to Watkins to end the inning unscathed.
After the Wings went quietly in the eighth with three consecutive ground ball outs, Baker returned to the mound to try and preserve the three-run lead. Cervanek led off the inning with a hit and scored quickly as Crespo pulled an inside pitch down the line and off the right field foul pole for a two-run homer. Baker responded by striking out Montanez and induced a ground ball to end the game.
NOTES: With the early season weather affecting the Wings' schedule, starter Baker appeared in relief of Slowey Tuesday, with Dave Gassner slated to start on Wednesday in Baker's spot. It was just the second relief appearance of Baker's pro career...Kester had a 6.14 ERA (10 ER, 14 2/3 innings) in three starts against the Wings last season...Moses stroked a 2-2 pitch from Kester to left field in the second for his first Triple-A hit. He added another single in the sixth inning...Span stole second in the second for his first steal at the Triple-A level...First baseman Williams made a great back-handed stab in the fifth inning, tossing to Slowey covering at first to take a hit away from Torres.
