Pawtucket Red Sox News Release

(Pawtucket, RI) - Norfolk erased a four run deficit by scoring the final seven runs in the game, including a three-run rally in the tenth against reliever Rich Hill that gave the Tides a 9-6 victory over the Pawtucket Red Sox Tuesday night in front of 7,633 fans at McCoy Stadium in the opener of a four-game series.

Shane Victorino, playing in his fifth game of a Major League injury rehab assignment, played the first six innings in right field and went 0-for-4 with a strikeout. Victorino is now 0-for-13 during his rehab stint (four games with Pawtucket, one with Lowell.)

Catcher Brian Ward drove home the tying run with a sacrifice fly in the eighth inning, then delivered the go-ahead hit in the tenth with a bases-loaded, two-run single. Pawtucket (39-41) has dropped four of its last six contests and has blown a lead of at least three runs in three of those four losses.

Alex Hassan drilled a three-run home run (2) and an RBI double in the first four innings to help the PawSox build a 6-2 lead. The Tides came back by scoring three runs in the fifth against Pawtucket starter Chris Hernandez and one in the eighth off of reliever Dalier Hinojosa.

After pitching a 1-2-3 ninth inning, Hill (3-3) allowed two hits and two walks (one intentional) in the tenth. Ward collected his game-winning single on a 3-2 pitch with an opposite field line drive to right field. John Ely relieved Hill and permitted a sacrifice fly to Steve Lombardozzi to complete the scoring.

Four Norfolk relievers combined to shutout the PawSox for the final six innings. Former Pawtucket hurler Brock Huntzinger tossed three scoreless frames (the sixth through eighth) and then Ramon Ramirez (1-0) worked a scoreless ninth. Clay Rapada worked out of trouble in the tenth to earn his first save.

Hassan's three-run blast that hit off the centerfield batter's eye highlighted a four-run third for Pawtucket against Tides starter Josh Stinson. Stinson allowed five runs and seven hits in his 2.2 innings of work. Randy Wolf relieved him and allowed Hassan's RBI double to left in the fourth.

Game two of the series is slated for a 7:05 pm first pitch on Wednesday night. Righty Anthony Ranaudo (7-4, 2.58) will get the ball for manager Kevin Boles, while southpaw Nick Additon (3-2, 3.41) is expected to start for the Tides.

Good seats are still available at the McCoy Stadium box office, by calling (401) 724-7300 or by visiting pawsox.com. Radio coverage on 920 AM (WHJJ) and also streaming online begins at 6:50 pm.
