Pawtucket Red Sox News Release
(Allentown, PA) - The Pawtucket Red Sox erased a three-run deficit thanks to key late hits from the Marrero cousins, but Nick Williams' 10th-inning home run for the Lehigh Valley IronPigs sent the PawSox to their third walk-off defeat on the road trip, 6-4, on Tuesday night at Coca-Cola Park.
Despite allowing three runs in the first inning, Eduardo Rodriguez pitched well in the second start of his rehabilitation assignment. The PawSox (12-13) would stay within striking distance but they did not completely erase the deficit until the ninth inning, when Chris Marrero hit a dramatic game-tying solo home run (3) off the top of the wall in center field with Pawtucket down to its final strike.
However, after PawSox reliever Noe Ramirez (0-2) pitched scoreless eighth and ninth innings and set down the first two batters in the 10th, he surrendered a single to Cam Perkins and the game-winning blast to Williams (2) over the fence in right-center field.
Lehigh Valley (13-11) used three first-inning hits to jump out to its early lead. Two singles, a throwing error from Rodriguez and an RBI groundout allowed Tommy Joseph to step to the plate with a run in and a runner on first. Joseph then hammered a two-run home run (5) over the left field fence.
Following the first inning, Rodriguez only allowed two baserunners-both singles-over the remainder of his six-inning outing. The lefthander retired 13 of the final 14 batters he faced, striking out three in his 84-pitch outing.
IronPigs starter Jake Thompson was in control, allowing just one run and two hits in seven inning of work. His only blemish came in the fifth inning, when he allowed an RBI double to Chris Marrero, who has gone 8-for-11 with four doubles and two home runs in three games at Coca-Cola Park this season.
Taylor Featherston delivered an RBI single for Lehigh Valley in the seventh inning that gave the Pigs their three-run lead back.
In the eighth inning, Deven Marrero lined a two-run double into the left field corner that pulled Pawtucket within 4-3. The Marrero cousins drove in every PawSox run on the night.
With two on, Sam Travis flew out to the wall in left-center field against Edward Mujica, allowing Lehigh Valley to retain its lead until Mujica allowed the game-tying shot in the top of the ninth.
Travis would again come up with two on and two out in the tenth inning, but he popped out to first base against IronPigs reliever Gregory Infante (1-0).
The PawSox will continue their seven-game road trip at Lehigh Valley tomorrow with a quick turnaround at 10:35 am. Lefthander Brian Johnson (1-2, 2.51) is scheduled to make the mount for Pawtucket against Lehigh Valley righthander Zach Eflin (3-0, 2.05). Radio coverage begins on WHJJ 920 AM and throughout the PawSox radio network at 10:05 am.
The PawSox will return to McCoy Stadium on Thursday for the first contest of a four-game homestand against the Rochester Red Wings. Good seats for all games in the series are still available at the McCoy Stadium box office, by calling (401) 724-7300 or by visiting pawsox.com.
