Green Grooves as Riders Top Bisons, 5-2

Buffalo Bisons News Release

Chad Green was likely the unluckiest player in the International League going into Tuesday's contest at Coca-Cola Field.

Coming in with a 1.44 ERA but an unfortunate 0-3 record, the RailRiders' opening day starter struck out two Bisons and issued a lone run over six innings, helping his team to a 5-2 win. Green allowed four hits in the first three frames but shut down the Bisons from there, sitting down 10 straight before making way for the bullpen.

"We had a tough battle tonight with their starter. He had some really good stuff," said manager Gary Allenson.

"We'll just have to move on from that. Sometimes you face a tough pitcher."

Catcher Gary Sanchez provided Green with the run support that had been lacking in the 24-year-old's first five starts, plating one run with a double in the first and cashing in two more with a third-inning blast into the screen above the 325 sign in left for his third homerun of the campaign.

Buffalo scored its first run in the bottom of the third on a scramble following Alexi Casilla's infield single. Casilla beat the throw to first and watched as Jon Berti rounded the bag at third and broke for home. Berti scored, narrowly beating the throw from first baseman, Chris Parmelee, with a head-first slide. As he did so, Sanchez's swipe-tag attempt saw the ball pop out of his glove, allowing Casilla to move into second on the error.

However, the short rally ended on the next at-bat with an Andy Burns pop out to second.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre added a pair in the seventh off of reliever Chad Jenkins to make it a 5-1 game. Rob Refsnyder made it aboard on an infield single and advanced to second on Chris Parmelee's walk. Cesar Puello then lined a single to center to load the bases.

Long-time Bison, Jonathan Diaz, then walked to score the RailRiders' fourth run. Two batters later, Ben Gamel moved all three runners up a base on David Adams' error as the third baseman couldn't come up with the ground ball cleanly.

In his second start of the season, Roberto Hernandez pushed his pitch total to 75 while taking the loss. The big righty stuck out four over five innings and surrendered three runs. After Sanchez took him deep, Hernandez retired seven straight to end his evening.

Buffalo added a run in the bottom of the ninth to make it 5-2. Domonic Brown doubled with a fly ball to the corner in left. Casey Kotchman dropped a single just inside of the left-field line to bring home Brown but then became the final out on a fielder's choice from A.J. Jimenez.

BISONS NOTES:

Tuesday's game marked the first time this season that the Bisons lost while outhitting their opponent. The Herd is now 1-8 in such occasions...Jesus Montero has reached base safely in 21 of 24 games...David Adams extended his hit streak to seven games with a single in the third inning...Buffalo falls to 2-11 in games in which they make an error.
