Toledo Mud Hens News Release
The Mud Hens cruised over the Braves in Gwinnett on Tuesday by a score of 12-5. Toledo launched four home runs in the contest, including two off the bat of RF Steven Moya. The Hens are now 11-12 on the season and have won four of their last five games. They recorded a total of fifteen hits on the night.
On the mound for Toledo, Warwick Saupold (1-1) tossed 5.1 innings, allowing five earned runs on six hits. His ERA now sits at 2.70. Gwinnett SP Lucas Sims lasted only four innings on Tuesday, relinquishing six earned runs on eight hits.
Moya has been on a tear as of late, as he is 7-8 thus far in the series. He recorded his third double in two days in the top of the second inning, and was promptly sent home by a line-drive home run off the bat of 1B Chad Huffman that left the field in a hurry. This was Huffman's third long ball of the season, giving Toledo the early 2-0 lead over Gwinnett. Huffman has been swinging a hot bat as of late, boasting a .304 BA.
Toledo extended their lead to 6-0 in the first half of the third inning that saw two more home runs for the Mud Hens. Moya went yard for the sixth time this season, scoring 3B Casey McGehee, and then LF Nate Schierholtz recorded his second long ball of 2016 with Huffman on base.
The Mud Hens threatened in the fifth inning and looked to add to their already commanding lead against the Braves. After CF Tyler Collins was hit by a pitch and McGehee doubled to right field, Moya notched his sixth hit of the series and sent Collins home. A double play ball off the bat of Huffman scored McGehee, extending Toledo's lead to 8-0.
The Braves loaded the bases in the bottom half of the fifth inning with three consecutive singles. Back-to-back ground outs scored two Gwinnett runners, but Saupold kept the remaining batters in check, holding the lead to 8-2.
Toledo answered back in the sixth by extending their lead to 12-2, with DH Cameron Maybin scoring on a single by McGehee, and Collins coming home via a throwing error from the Braves right fielder. With McGehee on base and Moya up to bat, the slugger drilled his second dinger of the game to right field. His 5 RBI day (single, double, two home runs) has risen his BA to .313 on the young season.
Ruben Alaniz replaced Saupold with bases loaded in the sixth inning. Gwinnett notched three runs off the righty, all earned to Saupold.
Also in relief for Toledo was Drake Britton in the seventh inning, Jeff Ferrell in the eighth, and Bruce Rondon in the ninth.
The Hens return to action for their final game of the series against the Braves. First pitch is slated for 10:35 a.m. in Gwinnett.
