Pawtucket Red Sox News Release
(Syracuse, NY) - The Syracuse Chiefs scored three runs in the first two innings against Eduardo Rodriguez, all the offense they would need to upend the Pawtucket Red Sox, 3-1, in the opener of a four-game series at NBT Bank Stadium on Thursday evening.
Rodriguez (0-1) made his first start of 2016 for Pawtucket (11-9), as the lefthander began his 30-day injury rehabilitation assignment.
Rodriguez, coming off a season with Boston in which he led American League rookies in wins, surrendered three runs, two earned, in 3.2 innings of work. He allowed six hits and three walks, while striking out two in a 75-pitch outing.
Ben Revere, who also began a rehab assignment on Thursday for Syracuse (10-9), led off the bottom of the first inning with a single and came around to score the first run for the Chiefs with two outs on a throwing error by Rodriguez.
After three straight Syracuse singles loaded the bases with nobody out in the second inning, Revere delivered an RBI single. Trea Turner followed with a sacrifice fly to give the Chiefs their third and final run.
Rodriguez retired six of the final seven batters he faced. He was relieved by Keith Couch, who threw 3.1 scoreless innings out of the bullpen. Robby Scott tossed a scoreless eighth inning.
Syracuse starter A.J. Cole (2-1) allowed just three hits in six shutout innings.
The PawSox collected six hits on the night, but each one came in a different inning. Pawtucket's lone run came against reliever Trevor Gott in the eighth. Marco Hernandez walked, Blake Swihart doubled and Hernandez scored on a sacrifice fly from Rusney Castillo.
Swihart made his outfield debut in the game, playing all nine innings in left field. Swihart caught both balls that came his way, including a tumbling catch on a sinking line drive that ended the sixth inning.
The PawSox play game two of their four-game series in Syracuse tomorrow at 6:35 p.m. Pawtucket lefthander Brian Johnson (1-2, 2.51) is scheduled to make the start against Syracuse righthander Taylor Hill (0-1, 2.87).
