WALDORF, MD . - The Somerset Patriots hit a pair of two-run home runs and had just enough to hold on to a 5-4 victory over the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs in the opener of their four-game series at Regency Furniture Stadium. The loss matches the Blue Crabs longest losing streak of the season at five games.
Gary Moran (3-3) improved as his start went along and earned the victory giving up four runs over six innings. Daryl Thompson (1-2) was hung with the loss yielding five runs, four of them earned, in five frames. Jon Hunton threw a scoreless 9th inning to pick up his 15th save of the season.
Somerset broke the scoreless tie with a two spot in the top of the 2nd. After Corey Smith reached on a two-base error, Mike Wilson crushed a two-run home run to left-center field, his first of the season.
The Blue Crabs stormed back to take the lead in the 3rd inning with four runs, all with two outs. Jake Opitz brought the Crabs within a run with an RBI double and Luke Murton followed that with a towering two-run home run to left field that gave Southern Maryland their first lead of the game. Tony Delmonico capped off the four-run frame with an RBI double, the fourth double hit in the inning.
The Patriots got a run back in the 4th inning and moved back in front in the 5th. Wilson drew a two-out walk and Adam Donachie then hit a two-run home run that just got over the wall in left to give Somerset the lead back at 5-4.
The Blue Crabs continue their series with the Somerset Patriots tomorrow evening at 7:05 PM. Righty Gaby Hernandez (0-3, 6.19) will be on the mound for Southern Maryland while right-hander Matt Langwell (2-4, 3.96) will pitch for Somerset.
