Pete Rose Leads Bridgeport Bluefish to Victory

(Bridgeport, Conn. - June 16, 2014) - Pete Rose managed the Bridgeport Bluefish (18-31) to a 2-0 victory over the Lancaster Barnstormers (30-21) on Monday night in front of a crowd of 4,573 at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard.

Rose was managing his first professional game in 25 years. The Hit King was able to provide the Bluefish players with leadership, advice and stories during his time as manager for one game. After arriving in Bridgeport on Monday morning, Rose spoke at a luncheon at Housatonic Community College for an hour before going back to The Ballpark at Harbor Yard to attend batting practice. After speaking to the Bluefish players in their locker room, he then attended a meet-and-greet with fans in the Harbor Club before attending a press conference in on the field. Rose exchanged starting lineups with the umpires and Lancaster manager Butch Hobson before signing autographs for fans. The former Cincinnati Red coached first base for four innings before finishing his Atlantic League managerial debut in Bridgeport's dugout. "Charlie Hustle," then wrapped up his stay in the Park City with a post game press conference on the field.

Bridgeport scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning after Denny Almonte doubled and came around to score on a Luis Rodriguez RBI single. They then added a run in the bottom of the fifth inning when Joe Mather singled home Prentice Redman.

Bridgeport starting pitcher D.J. Mitchell (3-4) pitched well giving up only three hits and no runs while allowing six walks with six strikeouts. Barnstormers starter Mark Rogers (3-2) was tagged with the loss after pitching four and two-thirds innings allowing four hits, one earned run, and five walks. Bridgeport's Winston Abreu picked up his tenth save of the season with a perfect ninth inning.

For the Bluefish, Mather led the way going 3-for-4 with an RBI.

Bridgeport and York will start a four-game series on Tuesday night at The Ballpark at Harbor with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Enjoy 2-For-1 Tuesday Admission Night. All box seats purchased at the Ticket Office will be two for the price of one.
