Patriots Shut out SeaWolves on Saturday

The SeaWolves could not get the bats going on Saturday night at TD Bank Park as they were shut out by the Somerset Patriots, 6-0. It was the first time this season that the 'Wolves suffered a shutout loss.

Somerset struck in the opening inning against Erie starter Austin Bergner. Anthony Volpe led off with a walk and Elijah Dunham followed with a two-run home run for a 2-0 lead.

In the last of the second, Bergner retired the first two batters before issuing a walk to James Nelson to keep the inning going. Volpe then doubled home Nelson for a 3-0 lead.

The Patriots added to the lead in the third when Blake Perkins connected on a one-out, solo home run.

Somerset starter Ken Waldichuk was dominant in his second appearance of the season. He did not allow a runner past first base in the first three innings and worked around a man on third with less than two outs in the fourth and fifth.

The Erie offense loaded the bases in the seventh against reliever Barrett Loeske on a Quincy Nieporte base hit, a Luis Carpio double and an Ulirich Bojarski walk. Loeske came back to strike out the next two batters to quell the threat.

Somerset would add two more runs in the seventh when Andres Chaparro homered off of Gerson Moreno, putting the game out of reach.

Waldichuk (2-0) earned the win tossing five shutout frames, allowing just three hits with no walks and nine strikeouts. He has not allowed a run across his first two starts.

Bergner (0-1) took the loss allowing four runs on four hits with three walks and three strikeouts in 3.2 innings.
