Patriots Offense Battles To 14-9 Win Over Road Warriors

Bridgewater, NJ - The Somerset Patriots defeated the Road Warriors 14-9 at Commerce Bank Ballpark on Thursday afternoon.

The Road Warriors took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning. First baseman Ian Bladergroen hit a solo home run (1) to right field. Right fielder Stephen Doetsch, second baseman Ron Fenwick, and third baseman David Housel all singled to load the bases. Left fielder Estee Harris then drew a bases loaded walk to score Doetsch.

Somerset got on the board with a run in the bottom of the third inning. Second baseman Danny Garcia was hit by a pitch, stole second base, and scored on an RBI single by shortstop Teuris Olivares to cut the lead to 2-1. The Patriots took the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. Third baseman Jeff Nettles and designated hitter Josh Pressley singled and scored on a three-run home run by left fielder Alan Zinter (1) to give Somerset a 4-2 lead.

The Road Warriors answered with two runs in the top of the fifth inning on back-to-back home runs by catcher Sandy Aracena (1) and designated hitter Vito Chiaravolloti (4) to tie the game 4-4.

Somerset regained the lead with a run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Center fielder Mike Lockwood walked, stole second and third and scored on a throwing error to give the Patriots a 5-4 advantage.

The Road Warriors jumped in front with two runs in the top of the sixth inning. Doetsch and Housel singled and both runners scored on a two-run double by Harris for a 6-5 lead.

The Patriots put up five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. First baseman Todd Leathers and right fielder Elliott Ayala reached on singles. Garcia and Lockwood then hit RBI singles to plate the runners. Nettles followed with a two-run home run (9) that gave the Patriots a 10-6 lead.

The Road Warriors wasted no time cutting the lead to one run with three runs in the top of the seventh inning. Aracena hit his second home run of the game and his second of the season to start the scoring. Bladergroen then singled and scored on a two-run home run by Doetsch (4) to cut the lead to 10-9.

Somerset answered with two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning on an RBI double by Ayala and a sacrifice fly by Garcia. The Patriots added two more runs in the bottom of the eighth inning on a two-run single by Leathers.

Patriots reliever Keith Ramsey (1-0) picked up the win, allowing five earned runs on six hits in 1.1 innings of work. Road Warriors reliever Aric Leclair (1-1) suffered the loss, allowing five earned runs on six hits in 0.2 innings pitched.

The Somerset Patriots 10th Anniversary Season presented by Ford will continue at home with a 7:05 pm game against the Road Warriors on Friday evening.
