Long Island Ducks News Release

(Central Islip, N.Y., May 31, 2007) - Kevin Haverbusch socked a grand slam in the bottom of the ninth inning, as the Long Island Ducks knocked off the Newark Bears on Thursday night 6-3 in front of 5,809 fans at Citibank Park.

The Ducks rally came after Newark pushed three across in the top of the ninth to grab a 3-2 edge. With the bases loaded and two outs in a 2-1 game, reliever Todd Erdos induced Javier Colina to pop the ball into shallow centerfield. But a miscommunication between Haverbusch and second baseman Ray Navarrete allowed the ball to drop and the Bears to score two on the play to take the lead. Erdos struck out the next batter before Haverbusch and the Ducks found redemption a half-inning later.

Edgardo Alfonzo delivered the game's only runs for the first eight innings with RBI singles in the second and eighth. He finished 2-for-4 at the plate. Jose Offerman also had two hits, his first at Citibank Park, and scored a run. Carl Everett scored a run and pitched in with two doubles before being replaced by pinch runner Haverbusch in the eighth.

James Garcia twirled seven spectacular innings for the Ducks, giving up no runs and just two hits. Erdos (1-0) picked up the win in relief, while Newark reliever Jason DiAngelo (0-2) took the loss after surrendering the grand slam in the ninth. The Ducks' rally spoiled a fine performance by Bears starter Carlos Mirabal, who gave up two runs on nine scattered hits in eight innings of work.

The Ducks continue a nine game homestand tomorrow with the series finale against Newark. Gametime is 7:05 p.m. Gates open at 6:05 p.m., and the first 2,000 fans into the park will receive Orange Sport Mesh Ducks Visors, courtesy of Davis Vision.
