Newark Bears News Release
NEWARK, NJ - May 31, 2007 - Kevin Haverbusch, who entered the game in the bottom of the eighth inning as a pinch runner, hit a walk-off grand slam to left field to lift the Long Island Ducks to a 6-3 victory over the Newark Bears at Citibank Park on Thursday night. Both teams are now 15-10 and tied for second place in the North Division of the Atlantic League.
The Ducks held a 2-0 lead into the ninth, but the Bears rallied off of reliever Todd Erdos (1-0), the eventual winning pitcher. Pinch-hitter Victor Rodriguez delivered a single to right after Erdos loaded the bases to bring the score to 2-1. With two outs and the Bears down to their final strike, second baseman Javier Colina drove in two runs with a bloop single to centerfield to give the Bears a 3-2 advantage.
Closer Jason DiAngelo (0-2) took the loss for the Bears. DiAngelo entered the game in the bottom of the ninth and allowed back-to-back singles from catcher Jamie Pogue and designated hitter Jose Offerman. After getting a force out at third on a fielder's choice, DiAngelo walked first baseman Pete Rose Jr. to load the bases. Haverbusch came up next and handed the Bears their third straight loss.
Right-handed starter James Garcia allowed no runs and only two hits in seven innings for the Ducks. He walked four and struck out three. Bears starter Carlos Mirabal went eight innings, giving up two runs on nine hits and one walk.
Right fielder Keith Reed got the only two hits off Garcia with a bunt single in the fifth and a single to right in the seventh. He finished the night 2-for-4.
Third baseman Edgardo Alfonzo connected for RBI singles in the second and eighth innings to give the Ducks their 2-0 lead. Alfonzo finished the game 2-for-4 with two RBI.
The Bears will try to prevent the sweep in the third game of the series scheduled for 7:05 PM on Friday night. Bears right-handed starter Gary Knotts (1-1) will square off against Long Island southpaw John Halama (1-1).
