Paterson Appointed Bulldogs Assistant Coach
February 4, 2003 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Hamilton Bulldogs News Release
The Edmonton Oilers have appointed Joe Paterson as the Assistant Coach of the Hamilton Bulldogs for the balance of the 2002-03 season.
The announcement comes after Geoff Ward was appointed to the Hamilton Bulldogs' head coach position on Monday, January 27th.
"It's a great opportunity to work with the Hamilton Bulldogs and develop players for two solid organizations in the Edmonton Oilers and the Montreal Canadiens," stated Paterson. "I look forward to working with Geoff Ward and assist in continuing the team success the Bulldogs have had this season."
Paterson, a 42-year-old native of Toronto, Ontario, brings a wealth of hockey experience to the Hamilton Bulldogs. Most recently he was a pro scout for the Florida Panthers during the 2001-02 season. He has developed players in the American Hockey League and Ontario Hockey League as a head coach and assistant coach. As well he spent 12 seasons playing professionally, including 291 games in the NHL and 392 games in the AHL.
"Joe will be a valuable addition to the Hamilton Bulldogs coaching staff," said Ward. "He has a proven record at developing prospects at the AHL level."
Paterson's most recent coaching experience came during (1999-01) when he was the head coach of the Louisville Panthers, the former AHL affiliate of the NHL's Florida Panthers. In Louisville's inaugural season (1999-00) he led the club to the AHL's sixth best record and a .575 winning percentage.
Paterson was an assistant coach with the Beast of New Haven, when the team was a dual AHL affiliate for the Florida Panthers and Carolina Hurricanes. He also helped develop Stanley Cup champion players such as Kris Draper, Chris Osgood and Darren McCarty when he was the assistant coach of the Adirondack Red Wings (AHL) from 1992-95.
At the junior level, Paterson had great success in the Ontario Hockey League. In two seasons (1995-97) as the head coach of the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds, Paterson led them to a record of 77 wins, 40 losses and 15 ties for a .640 winning percentage. In 1996-97 the Greyhounds won the OHL's West Division under Paterson's leadership.
Paterson is expected to behind the Hamilton Bulldogs' bench, along with head coach Geoff Ward, on Wednesday, February 5th at 7:00 p.m. as the Bulldogs host the Albany River Rats at Copps Coliseum.
