Phantoms' Slaney becomes all-time AHL All-Star Game points leader
February 4, 2003 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Adirondack Phantoms News Release
(PHILADELPHIA, Feb. 4, 2003) - Philadelphia Phantoms defenseman John Slaney helped rally his team to victory and became the AHL All-Star Game's all-time points leader along the way Monday night at the Cumberland County Civic Center in Portland, Maine. Slaney recorded a goal and two assists as the Canadian AHL All-Stars scored five unanswered goals to post a 10-7 win over the PlanetUSA squad at the 2003 Dodge AHL All-Star Classic.
Slaney, who started and made his fourth straight AHL All-Star Classic appearance, now has eight career AHL All-Star points (3G, 5A) to break the record of seven held by Willie Marshall and Arnie Kullman.
The 30-year-old sparked the Canadian comeback on Monday by setting up Charlie Stephens' power-play goal that narrowed the gap to 7-6 with 2:10 to go in the second period. Slaney then made it 7-7 with a goal at 8:53 of the third period before Team Canada tallied three more times to win for the second straight year.
The winner of the last two Eddie Shore Awards (AHL's top defenseman), Slaney is currently seventh among all AHL defensemen in points (31) and ranks tied for fourth in assists (26). He is one of just two Phantoms to appear in all 47 games this season and tops the team in assists, while placing second in points and shots (120). Slaney also captured the Barry Ashbee Award as the Phantoms' best defenseman last season when he led the team in assists (39) and game-winning goals (6), tied for the club lead in points (59) and plus-minus (plus-12) and tied for second in goals (20).
Slaney, who served as captain of the Canadian AHL All-Star team last year, set an AHL record for goals in a season by a defenseman with 30 in 1999-2000. In 2000-01, he entered All-Star Weekend leading the league in scoring while serving as team captain for the host Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. Slaney was then acquired by the Flyers organization the day before the All-Star Classic (for Kevin Stevens) and proceeded to collect a goal and two assists to earn game MVP honors.
Philadelphia begins a stretch of 13 games in 19 days on Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. The team is in action at the First Union Spectrum this weekend on Friday at 7:05 p.m. vs. the Hamilton Bulldogs and on Sunday at 5:05 p.m. vs. the Syracuse Crunch.
