Grand Rapids Griffins News Release

Grand Rapids, Mich. - The Grand Rapids Griffins of the American Hockey League on Tuesday signed goaltender Alfie Michaud (AL-fee mee-SHOH) to a professional tryout. Michaud's signing was necessitated by the groin injury suffered by Joey MacDonald in the Griffins' 2-1 loss to San Antonio on Jan. 29. He's expected to serve as the backup to Marc Lamothe on Wednesday when the Griffins visit the Utah Grizzlies at 9:00 p.m.

Michaud, 26, has an 11-1-2 record and one shutout in 14 outings this season for the Peoria Rivermen, the top team in the East Coast Hockey League. With a 1.98 goals against average, Michaud is 81:01 short of qualifying as the top-ranked goaltender in the ECHL, and his 0.935 save percentage currently places second on the circuit. The Selkirk, Manitoba native played the majority of the 2001-02 season with the AHL's Manitoba Moose, leading the team with 16 wins, four shutouts, a 2.68 GAA and a 0.907 save percentage in 32 appearances.

Michaud, who signed as a free agent with the Vancouver Canucks on July 12, 1999 and made his NHL debut the following season, led Maine to the 1999 NCAA National Championship. After pacing Hockey East with 28 wins during the regular season, he earned MVP honors during the NCAA championship tournament, holding Boston College and New Hampshire to a total of three goals during the Frozen Four.
