29-Year Old Right-Hander Promoted To San Francisco Thursday; Ishikawa In Starting Lineup For Giants
FRESNO, CA - Fresno Grizzlies starter Matt Palmer was promoted to the San Francisco Giants on Wednesday morning, a day after being scratched from a scheduled start in Portland. It marks the first time in Palmer's seven-year career in the Giants' organization that he is on the big league roster. Travis Ishikawa, who was promoted on Wednesday, will start at first base for San Francisco this afternoon in Houston.
Palmer, a native of Caruthersville, MO, was originally selected in the 31st Round of the 2002 Draft out of Southwest Missouri State. He made his Triple-A debut with Fresno in 2006, and has spent parts of the last three seasons with the Grizzlies. This season he was 6-9 with a 4.13 ERA and a Pacific Coast League leading 137 strikeouts.
Over the last three years, Palmer has ascended the Grizzlies franchise leaderboard in several categories. A Chukchansi Park fan favorite, the right-hander currently ranks third in team history in wins and strikeouts, and fourth in innings pitched. He has been at his best over the last two months with Fresno, going 3-1 with a 2.87 ERA in five July starts, and earning the win in his final start last Friday in Salt Lake City.
First-baseman Travis Ishikawa, promoted to San Francisco on Wednesday, will make his first start of the season for the Giants this afternoon at Houston's Minute Maid Park, batting sixth. On Thursday Ryan Rohlinger became the 13th Giant to make his major league debut in 2008, tying this year's club with the 1996 team for the most in history. They'll break that record when Pablo Sandoval starts today behind the plate.
The Fresno Grizzlies return to Chukchansi Park to kick off their final nine home games of the season on Saturday, August 16th when the Las Vegas 51's, Triple-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Dodgers, come to town. Hometown favorite Parker will take on the famous Phillie Phanatic that night in a Mascot Showdown.
