New Orleans Baby Cakes News Release
Micah Hoffpauir drilled another home run to lead the Iowa Cubs to a third consecutive win over the New Orleans Zephyrs on Thursday night. The Cubs outhit the Zephyrs 13 to 8 and topped the Zephyrs 6-3 in front of 6,758 at Principal Park. New Orleans struck first with a run in the first inning with a Raul Casanova RBI single. Hoffpauir tied the game with a solo home run. The Z's scored a run in the second inning to take the lead at 2-1. Iowa answered with a Bobby Scales solo homer to lead off the fourth. The I-Cubs took the lead in the sixth inning with a squeeze bunt to score Scales from third. Iowa added another run with a Scales two out single in the seventh inning to take a 4-2 lead. New Orleans scored a run in the eighth inning to pull within a run but left the bases loaded. The weather stirred up some nasty wind and rain in the bottom of the eighth inning and aided in the Cubs adding two additional runs to extend the lead to 6-3. New Orleans left 13 men on base in the game and missed out on four I-Cubs errors in the game. New Orleans starter Jon Niese suffers the loss by allowing four runs in seven innings of work. Mitch Atkins earned the win to improve to 7-0 on the season.
Game Notes: The Zephyrs have dropped three consecutive games in Des Moines and lost another game in the standings. The Zephyrs trail the first place Redhawks by eight games with 18 games to play. New ORleans 4-3 on the trip. Jon Niese attempted to be the first Zephyr to win his first four starts for the Zephyrs. Raul Casanova added a hit and extended his hit streak to eight games. Michel Abreu missed his 9th consecutive game with an injured hamstring.
Coming Up: The Zephyrs continue a four game series and a stretch of eight straight games against the Iowa Cubs on Friday. The Z's will start RH Ruddy Lugo (7-10) against RH Mike Burns (7-10). RADIO: AM 690 WIST.
