Portland Beavers News Release
PORTLAND, Ore. - J.D. Closser's two-run single broke a tie game early and the infield combination of Matt Antonelli and Brett Dowdy turned five double plays as the Portland Beavers held on to defeat the Fresno Grizzlies 5-4 Thursday night before 9,078 at PGE Park.
Starter Josh Geer (8-8) won for the third time in his last four starts, striking out five and yielding three runs and nine hits across six innings. Despite allowing a solo home run to Guillermo Rodriguez in the top of the ninth, Edwin Moreno held on to record his 16th save.
The Grizzlies (58-68) out-hit Portland 14-8, but the middle-infield combination of Antonelli and Dowdy helped out on defense by combining for the most double plays in a single game for the Beavers (65-60) since the team returned to the PCL in 2001.
Huber's two-run double and an RBI single from Matt Antonelli gave the Beavers a 3-1 lead in the first.
The Grizzlies countered with back-to-back RBI singles in the third from Brett Harper and Scott McClain to tie it, but Closser hit a two-out single that scored Paul McAnulty and Huber in the bottom of the inning to restore Portland's two-run advantage.
Clay Timpner logged four hits and Harper was 3-for-4 for the Grizzlies, who have lost 13 of their last 17 games.
Fresno starter Ryan Sadowski (6-3) fanned seven in just 3 2/3 innings of work but suffered the loss after giving up five runs and eight hits to the Beavers, who conclude their series with Fresno Friday night at 7:05 p.m.
NOTES: The PCL record for most double players by a team in one game is seven, set by Seattle on April 21, 1956 ... the Beavers hosted Speed Dating Night during the game.
