Pair of Saints Selected During 2013 NHL Entry Draft

NEWARK, New Jersey-A pair of Dubuque Fighting Saints had their dreams come true Sunday night. Dubuque defenseman Mike Downing and forward Peter Quenneville were both selected in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft, which was held at the at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. Downing was a chosen by the Florida Panthers in the 4th Round while the Columbus Blue Jackets took Quenneville in the final round.

Downing, a Canton, Michigan native, was chosen by Florida with the 97th overall selection. Downing spent the past two seasons in Dubuque and in 106 career games, the shutdown defender registered 7 goals and 30 assists for 37 points, to go along with 175 penalty minutes. Downing is committed to the University of Michigan and attended the NHL Draft with his parents, and was quick to point out his time in Dubuque helped him hear his name called Sunday.

"Heading into the draft, it was unbelievable winning a championship and being with a great group of guys," Downing said while meeting with the media following his selection. "We had a great year that helped me get to where I am at now. I have to thank the organization which has been first class with what they have done."

Downing joins former Dubuque teammate Mike Matheson in the Panthers organization. Matheson was a 1st Round selection of Florida in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft.

Quenneville also heard his name called, but the wait was a little longer for the scoring forward. Quenneville was selected in the 7th Round, 195th overall by Columbus. After being passed over last year during his first year of eligibility, Quenneville put together a fantastic season with Dubuque to make sure NHL teams would take notice. An All-USHL Second Team pick, Quenneville scored 33 goals and 37 assists for 70 points during the 2012-2013 campaign, and added nine points in nine playoff games en route the to a Clark Cup Championship. The Edmonton, Alberta native was Dubuque's second leading scorer during the regular season and will start his NCAA career at Quinnipiac this fall.

Dubuque's 1st Round selection in the 2013 USHL Phase II Draft, blueliner Ryan Segalla was also chosen on Sunday in the 4th Round, 119th overall by the Pittsburgh Penguins.

In total, over 30 players with ties to the USHL were selected Sunday, including 28 players who spent the majority of the 2012-2013 season on a USHL team's roster. Former Team USA blueliner Seth Jones went fourth overall in the 1st Round to Nashville, and Michael McCarron, a forward from Team USA U-18, went 25th overall to the Montreal Canadiens.
