McAdam Makes Impression on Islanders

Waterloo, Iowa-Next fall, Eamon McAdam will join the newest program in NCAA Division I hockey, but Sunday an NHL team which has been around for 40 years selected the goaltender during the 2013 NHL Draft in New Jersey.

McAdam became the first U.S.-born goaltender to be selected and just the sixth netminder taken overall when the New York Islanders picked him during the third round with the 70th overall selection.

The suburban Philadelphia native will return to his home state and join the squad at Penn State as the Nittany Lions move to the Big Ten for hockey next season. Over three seasons as a Waterloo Black Hawk, he was 30-18-3, including 17 wins last winter. McAdam also helped the U.S. Junior Select Team to a gold medal during the 2012 World Junior A Challenge and the Black Hawks to silver at the 2012 Junior Club World Cup in August.

"Eamon was at the top of his game in Omsk [Russia]. There were some pressure situations, and he is a big reason we were able to reach the final game of that tournament," said Waterloo Head Coach P.K. O'Handley.

McAdam was dubbed the most outstanding goaltender of the Junior Club World Cup. With professional scouts keeps a close watch on him from that tournament through the end of the season, he was slotted sixth among North American goalies in the NHL Central Scouting Service's final pre-draft rankings.

McAdam is the first goalie with ties to the Black Hawks to be drafted since Kevin Regan was chosen by the Boston Bruins in 2003. The Islanders' only previous Waterloo draft pick was Blake Kessel during the sixth round in 2007. Earlier that year, Jason Blake had represented New York during the NHL All-Star game in the midst of a 40-goal season. Mark Eaton and Chris Ferraro also enjoyed stints with the Islanders.
