Hawks Draft Pick Taken in NHL Draft

June 30, 2013 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

Waterloo, Iowa-The Waterloo Black Hawks are excited about forward Zach Sanford's hockey future, and so too are the Washington Capitals.

During the second round of the National Hockey League's 2013 Draft in New Jersey Sunday, the Capitals selected Sanford in with the 61st overall pick. Sanford was the final choice in the second round after Waterloo defenseman Ian McCoshen had led off the second round in the 31st slot.

Waterloo's claim to the 6-3, 168-pound skater came with his selection during Phase II of the USHL Draft in May. Sanford was the Hawk's first Phase II pick in the 28th overall position; the Hawks did not choose a player in the first round after trading that pick during the season.

Skating in the Eastern Junior Hockey League for northern Massachusetts-based Islanders Hockey Club, Sanford scored 12 goals and 24 assists to total 36 points in 37 games. He made a strong impression on scouts late in the season, climbing from 83rd in the NHL Central Scouting Midterm report to 60th in the final rankings. Sanford is committed to Boston College.

The Capitals have drafted Black Hawks on two prior occasions: in 2009 they chose Patrick Wey and in 2005 it was Andrew Thomas, each in the fourth round. Three Waterloo alumni have appeared for the Caps, most recently defenseman John Gruden during the 2003/04 season. Prior to that, twin forwards Peter and Chris Ferraro were there in 2001/02.
