Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

Waterloo, Iowa-After months of speculation about which NHL team might select him, the Florida Panthers called Ian McCoshen's name with the first pick of the second round Sunday during the 2013 NHL Draft in New Jersey.

It is the earliest selection of a Waterloo player since Peter Ferraro was chosen 24th overall by the New York Rangers in 1992. Prior to Sunday, Waterloo had never had a player chosen during the second round of the NHL Draft.

"There aren't numbers which can give a clear picture by themselves how valuable a good defenseman is, but people in Waterloo who have been watching Ian for three years have probably gotten used to what he is capable of. He is a special player, and we were a better team anytime he was on the ice," said Black Hawks Head Coach P.K. O'Handley.

One of the youngest players eligible for the 2013 NHL Draft, McCoshen joined the Black Hawks in 2010/11 at just 15. He skated in 150 career regular season USHL games and had a cumulative +30 plus/minus rating. That included being +35 last season and being named to the All-USHL First Team. The Boston College recruit's three years included 19 goals and 51 assists; with 44 points last year, McCoshen was second in scoring among league defensemen. NHL Central Scouting ranked the 6-3, 207-pound Hudson, Wisconsin, native 24th among North American skaters eligible for the draft.

With the pick, the Panthers drafted their fourth Black Hawk since 2005. The group includes forward Zach Bearson (2005), defenseman John Lee (2007), and defenseman Eddie Wittchow (2011).
