Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

WOODBRIDGE, VA - Myrtle Beach starter Jacob Thompson worked three solid innings in the series finale of a three-game set with the Potomac Nationals. The fourth was his, and his team's, undoing.

Potomac broke open a 2-1 game with a four-run fourth inning, and the Nationals added two more in the fifth en route to an 8-4 win over the Pelicans in the teams' final scheduled 2009 matchup at Pfitzner Stadium.

Already trailing by a run despite Michael Fisher's second homer of the season in the second inning, a solo shot that evened the game at a run apiece at the time, the Pelicans fell victim to a quick-strike P-Nats' offense in the fourth. After Chris Marrero was hit by a pitch to open the inning, Thompson got two quick outs before walking Devin Ivany. The Nationals made the Danville, Virginia native pay as Tim Pahuta drove a three-run homer out to right field to open Potomac's margin to 5-1. Still with two outs in the inning, Michael Martinez walked and stole second, scoring on a Dan Nelson RBI single for a 6-1 Nats lead.

Thompson (4-3) exited after one out in the fifth but not before allowing two more runs on three Potomac doubles. The right-hander allowed all eight Nationals runs on nine hits over four and a third innings, striking out five and issuing two walks. Martinez also homered in the game, a leadoff solo shot in the first, his first longball of the season.

Potomac's Brad Peacock held the Pelicans down until running out of gas in the sixth. Fisher's homer was Myrtle Beach's only run until that inning. Gerry Rodriguez connected with a 2-2 Peacock offering, sending it over the left-center field wall and chasing the right-hander from the game. Peacock (1-0) was charged with four earned on five hits over five and two-thirds. The Miami, Florida native struck out nine and walked just one. With the loss, Myrtle Beach slumped to 2-4 on its six-game road trip.

Michael Broadway continued his second-half surge, working two and a third innings of scoreless, one-hit ball in relief of Thompson. Rudy Darrow rebounded from allowing four runs on Monday night in two-thirds of an inning by tossing a scoreless inning of his own.

The Pelicans return home Thursday to welcome the Kinston Indians for a four-game series from July 30 through August 2. Tickets for all Pelicans home games are available at the BB&T Coastal Field box office, by calling (843)918-6000 or by visiting the Tickets page at MyrtleBeachPelicans.com.
