Winston-Salem Dash News Release
Woodbridge, VA - Michael Martinez broke a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the eighth inning with an RBI triple to lift Potomac over Winston-Salem 3-2 in the opener of their four-game series on Thursday night at Pfitzner Stadium. Nationals reliever Drew Storen (1-0), who was Washington's 2009 first round pick, gave up a tying run in the eighth, but retired the side in order in the ninth to collect his first professional win.
Both starting pitchers were solid as Will Atwood retired the first 14 batters he faced. He tossed seven innings and held Winston-Salem to one run on four hits with five strikeouts, but did not factor in the decision. Dash starter Johnnie Lowe (7-5) worked seven innings and allowed three runs to suffer the loss.
Potomac turned to the long ball to grab an early lead. Danny Espinosa lifted a solo home run that hooked inside the left field foul pole in the bottom of the first inning. In the second, Lowe surrendered a solo home run to Francisco Plasencia, who launched his shot inside the right field pole to put the Nationals in front 2-0.
The Dash finally snapped Atwood's perfect game in the top of the fifth inning when Logan Johnson smacked a solo home run to trim the Nationals lead in half. Winston-Salem knotted the score at two in the bottom of the eighth inning against Storen with a two-out rally. Storen, who hadn't allowed a walk in his first 19.2 innings as a professional, handed CJ Lang a free pass with two outs and Dale Mollenhauer followed with an RBI double.
Potomac's game-winning rally began in the bottom of eighth inning against Lowe when Brian Peacock led off with a double. Winston-Salem turned to Tyson Corley out of the bullpen and he struck out Boomer Whiting before giving up the game-winning triple to Martinez.
The Dash and Nationals meet up in game two of this four-game series on Friday night at Pfitzner Stadium. Winston-Salem will send RHP Anthony Carter (10-4, 4.14) to the mound, while Potomac is expected to turn to RHP Trevor Holder (0-0, - -), who is making his Carolina League debut. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
The Dash returns to Wake Forest Baseball Park on Monday, August 3 when they open a seven-game home stand with the first of three against Wilmington. Single-game tickets can be purchased online at www.wsdash.com or by calling the Dash office at (336) 714-2287.
