Wilmington Blue Rocks News Release

Wilmington, DE - Injured Kansas City Royals pitcher Gil Meche will make a rehab start for the Wilmington Blue Rocks on Sunday. Meche, who is on the disabled list with a bad back, is expected to throw between 55-65 pitches as the Blue Crew hosts the Salem Red Sox at 1:35 p.m.

Meche has not pitched since before the All-Star break, when he allowed eight runs in just 3.2 innings to the Boston Red Sox. There was hope he would be able to rejoin the Royals and start for the big club on Saturday, but instead Bruce Chen will take the mound that day.

The 30-year-old right-hander signed a five-year $55 million contract with Kansas City in December of 2006. He is 82-77 with a 4.37 ERA over nine major league seasons. Meche's win-loss record has been much worse in 2009 though, as he is just 4-9. But the hurler's ERA is just slightly above his career total at 4.50.

Meche becomes the third Major Leaguer to make a rehab start in Wilmington in the last five seasons. On April 18, 2005 Wade Miller allowed one run in five innings pitched while striking out six. Then Brandon Duckworth made a pair of appearances at Frawley in August of 2007. Duckworth went 2.1 scoreless frames on August 6, but then took a loss while surrendering four runs in just 1.2 innings four days later.

It will be Meche's first Minor League appearance since 2004.
