P-Bruins Let Early Lead Slip Away in 5-4 Loss

Providence, RI - The Providence Bruins fell to the Lehigh Valley Phantoms Saturday night 5-4 in the first matchup of the season with their division foe. The P-Bruins got goals from Cameron Hughes, Wiley Sherman, Colby Cave and Karson Kuhlman while Dan Vladar made his seventh start of the season in net.

The Providence offense exploded for a season-high four first period goals scored by four different players. The first came just 2:00 into the game when Peter Cehlarik stole the puck in the right wing corner and sent it to Ryan Fitzgerald in the high slot. He fed Hughes inside the right circle, and his wrister beat Carter Hart for his fifth goal of the season and gave the P-Bruins a 1-0 lead. Sherman extended the lead to 2-0 with his first career goal at 8:31, but Colby Cave was the one who got it started. Entering the zone with Sherman, he deked a Phantoms defender to take him out of the play and continued towards the net on a 2-on-1. Drawing in the defender, he centered the puck to Sherman at the left doorstep and he put it in to make things 2-0 Providence.

Cave's sixth goal of the year at 13:01 forced Lehigh Valley to make a change between the pipes. With little room to operate, he fired a shot from inside the right circle over Hart's left shoulder, prompting the Phantoms to pull him in favor of Anthony Stolarz. The move woke up the Phantoms momentarily as Connor Bunnaman scored at 17:33 to put the Lehigh Valley on the board, but 61 seconds later the P-Bruins regained a three-goal lead. Forechecking behind the net, Kuhlman stole the puck and jammed it in around the pole. His first career goal sent Providence to the first intermission up by a score of 4-1.

Lehigh Valley had an early 5-on-3 power play in the second and took advantage just 12 seconds into the period. Phil Varone centered the puck to Chris Connor in the crease and he chipped it by Vladar to make it 4-2. Varone got a goal of his own at 11:03 off a deflection from Phillip Samuelson's shot and the Phantoms cut their deficit to 4-3 entering the third. Lehigh Valley evened the score 4:55 into the final frame on a goal from Carsen Twarynski, who crashed the net and crashed into Vladar but got the puck over the line to make it 4-4. With five minutes left in the game Philippe Myers completed the Phantom's comeback on the power play. Mike Vecchione fired a shot from the left dot that Vladar stopped, but the rebound went right to Myers in the left slot. His fourth goal of the season put Lehigh Valley ahead for good as they went on to a 5-4 victory.

Hart stopped 5-8 shots before getting pulled while Stolarz stopped 24-25 shots after entering in the first period. Vladar stopped 21-26 shots in the loss. Providence was 0-5 on the power play and 4-6 on the penalty kill. The P-Bruins are back in action tomorrow night at the Dunk when they welcome the Rochester Americans to town at 7:05pm for their only meeting of the season in Providence.
