Belleville Senators News Release

Christian Wolanin had the overtime winner as the Senators beat the Toronto Marlies 5-4 Friday night at CAA Arena.

Wolanin scored in regulation as did Jack Rodewald, Logan Brown and Jordan Murray scored for the Senators while in his third straight start, Filip Gustavsson made 29 saves. Chris Mueller (2), Pierre Engvall and Rasmus Sandin had goals for Toronto as Eamon McAdam turned aside 22 shots.

Wolanin won the game 1:29 into the extra frame as on an odd-man rush he wired a slap shot past McAdam for his second of the night and the two points for Belleville.

Tied at 2-2 heading into the third, the Sens struck twice in 17 seconds through two d-men to take a 4-2 lead. When Stuart Percy had a clear lane to shoot he took the extra pass to Murray whose wrister beat McAdam at 1:09 before Wolanin's one-timer on an odd-man rush pushed the lead to 4-2 as Rodewald's centering pass was right on the blue-liner's stick.

But Toronto started crawling its way back in the final half of the period as Sandin cut the lead to 4-3 at 14:16 before the Marlies found a tying goal with just 14.7 seconds left in regulation as Mueller redirected a Sam Gagner point shot.

It took only 2:03 for the Senators to open the scoring as on the power play Rodewald potted his fifth of the year after taking a nifty pass from Ben Sexton. The Marlies put 14 shots on Gustavsson is the period with Sam Gagner coming the closest for the visitors as his backhander in close was squeezed by the Sens goaltender between his left arm and hip.

The Senators again struck quickly to open a period as it took them 1:51 to double their lead on Brown's first professional goal as he used his 6'6 frame to life the puck over McAdam after Adam Tambellini threw the puck out front.

Toronto finally found a way past Gustavsson at 3:49 as Mueller had his stick on the ice to push Andreas Borgman's pass by the Sens netminder for his seventh of the year and they found an equalizer at 15:47 through Engvall who outskated Sens defenceman Andreas Englund to a loose puck before beating his fellow Swede Gustavsson for his fourth goal of the year and a 2-2 scoreline for 40 minutes.

Belleville is back in action Saturday as they host Bridgeport for the only time this season and the second #HockeyFightsCancer night. Tickets are available.
