Providence Bruins News Release

BRIDGEPORT, C.T. - The Providence Bruins scored two goals within 0:35 of each other in the second and defeated the Bridgeport Sound Tigers 3-2 Saturday night at Webster Bank Arena. The P-Bruins earned the season series win, and were the first visiting team to take two points in the six-game set.

Neither the Bruins nor the Sound Tigers could light the lamp in the first, though Providence had a few quality chances. Ethan Werek was hooked at the top of the crease with Sound Tigers goaltender Kevin Poulin off-balance, which led to the first Providence power play. After the P-Bruins' second man advantage, Seth Griffith maneuvered through the slot, went forehand to backhand and aimed low, but Poulin went into a split just in time.

Andrew Cherniwchan had a hand in the opening goal of the game for the second game in a row. His feed from the far side of the crease to Rob Flick led to a 1-0 Providence lead. Flick fielded it with a backhand at the goal line, then deposited it with a forehand bid at 1:42.

Thirty-five seconds later, the P-Bruins doubled the advantage. (That came one night after allowing the game-tying goal less than a minute later on Friday versus Manchester.) Zack Phillips' wrister from the left wing circle made it a 2-0 edge. Bridgeport captain Aaron Ness cut the deficit in half with a wrister from the left side as Providence goalie Jeremy Smith dove from the far post to the near one. Ness held the puck a bit longer, then sent it far-side at 9:42 while on the power play.

In the closing seconds of a Bridgeport abbreviated power play in the third, Ryan Pulock shot the puck to the top of the crease, and it was loose for a handful of seconds because of the pile of bodies in front vying for it. Smith finally dove on it for the whistle. Linus Arnesson registered his first AHL point in his first career game with a wrister from blue line. Ethan Werek tipped it in to give the visitors a 3-1 edge at 14:30.

Adam Pelech created a scoring chance for Bridgeport at 15:44 as he raced toward the goal line left the puck in the slot for the team's leading scorer Dustin Jeffery, and it was the center who hacked it into the cage to pull back within one. The Sound Tigers had more than a minute of 6-on-5 play, which started with a bang. A Sound Tigers skater put a loose puck into the crease with bodies in front, but Smith lunged out to make save on his second attempt.

The Bruins will be back at home on Sunday to host the St. John's IceCaps at 3:05pm for their last home game in March.
