Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - The Binghamton Senators struck twice in the third period to rally past the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins for a 4-3 win on Saturday at Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza.

The game was tied, 2-2, in the second period until the final 15.2 seconds of the frame as Tom Kostopoulos broke down the right wing and put a centering pass off the pads of Senators goalie Peter Mannino. The carom came right to Scott Wilson, who roofed the puck for his 15th goal of the season and the first lead of the match for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.

It took 99 seconds of the third for Binghamton to level the score. A deflected shot in the high slot by Brad Mills came to the right circle for a quick snapshot by Max McCormick that eluded the blocker of Penguins goaltender Jeff Zatkoff.

The Senators took the lead for good with 5:51 left in regulation on a floating shot from the left wall from Shane Prince that ricocheted off a stick in front and to the top of the net.

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton had a chance to tie with a late power play and the net empty in favor of the extra attacker, but Mannino would deny the bid to force the contest past regulation.

The Penguins put tremendous pressure on the Senators in the first period - owning an 8-1 shot advantage at one point - but the Senators would strike first at 13:13 when Michael Sdao's shot from the left point made it through a screen and past the glove of Zatkoff.

Fourteen seconds later, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton was given the chance to respond with a four-minute power play after a double-minor high sticking penalty was assessed to Troy Rutkowski. Instead it was Binghamton going up, 2-0, eight seconds into the Penguins man-advantage when Buddy Robinson caught up to a clearing attempt and skated in for a shorthanded breakaway tally.

On the same power play, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton cut Binghamton's lead back down to one when defenseman Danny Syvret threw a wrist shot from the center blueline that sailed to back of the net with 5:11 left in the period for his first goal in a Penguins uniform.

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton came storming out in the second and tied the score just 47 seconds into the period when Carter Rowney was able to stuff a loose puck under the pad of Mannino.

With 33 saves on 36 shots, Mannino was victorious for the third time in his last four starts. Zatkoff suffered his third straight loss, stopping 19-of-23

Penguins defenseman Taylor Chorney set a career high for assists and points in a game with three assists on the evening.
