Providence Bruins News Release
The National Hockey League announced today that former Providence Bruins goaltender Andrew Raycroft has been named the league's Rookie of the Month for January. The announcement comes one day after he was named the NHL's Defensive Player of the Week for the period ending February 1. Raycroft posted an 8-2-0 record in 10 games for the Boston Bruins in January, along with a 1.30 GAA and .956 save percentage. He had a streak of six consecutive wins during the month, including road shutouts at Detroit (3-0) on January 7, and Montreal (1-0) on January 31.
Raycroft, a 23-year-old native of Belleville, Ontario, is in his first full NHL season with the Bruins. He spent most of his first three professional seasons in Providence, beginning in the 2000-01 season. Raycroft was voted by his teammates as the P-Bruins' Most Valuable Player in 2001-02, after setting franchise single-season records for games played (56), minutes played (3,317), saves (1,546) and shutouts (4). He posted back-to-back 20-win seasons in 2001-02 and 2002-03. Raycroft also ranks second in team history in wins (56) and shutouts (6). He was 56-48-13 with a 2.71 GAA and .911 save percentage in 121 career games with Providence.
Raycroft is 18-12-6 in 37 games this season with Boston, along with a 1.89 GAA (fifth in the NHL) and .932 save percentage (fourth in the NHL). He also has three shutouts. His outstanding efforts as a rookie this season have been recognized in his selection to play in the YoungStars Game at the NHL All-Star Weekend. Raycroft was Boston's fourth pick, 135th overall, in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft.
The Providence Bruins return to action on home ice on Friday, February 6 at 7:05 p.m., when they host the Hartford Wolf Pack. The game will be televised live on COX 3.
