February 24, 2017 - ECHL (ECHL)
Wichita Thunder News Release
Cincinnati, OH (Feb. 24th) - Drew Owsley made 35 saves that included two highlight reel ones in the third period, but the Thunder fell on Friday night 2-0 to Cincinnati at US Bank Arena.
The only goal of the first came from Shawn O'Donnell with four minutes to go. He caught up to a loose puck near the Thunder line, drove to the net and scored past Owsley.
In the second, Jaynen Rissling recorded his sixth of the season with a shot from the blue line at 18:39 and increased the Cyclones lead to 2-0.
Cincinnati appeared to increase the lead to 3-0 just four minutes into the third, but the ref ruled that Jonathan Diaby played the puck with his hand and it was immediately waved off. From then on, the two netminders took over the game. Owsley made a terrific stop on Seth Ambroz in the slot at the nine-minute mark. He poke-checked the puck right to Ambroz and somehow dove back to his left to stop the shot. With just over eight minutes left, he made another outstanding save on Justin MacDonald and kept it at a two-goal deficit. The Thunder had a chance with six minutes left to cut into the lead, but Joel Rumpel stopped a breakaway attempt from Louick Marcotte. Rumpel held on from there and the Cyclones won by the final of 2-0.
With his efforts, Owsley was named as the third star, stopping 35 of 27 shots. Rumpel grabbed his first shutout of the season and first star honors as he stopped 27.
Wichita went 0-for-3 on the power play. Cincinnati was 0-for-3 on the man advantage.
The Thunder heads to Fort Wayne tomorrow night to face the Komets at 6:30 p.m. CST.
