Evansville Otters News Release
(EVANSVILLE, Ind.) - The Evansville Otters held a two-day tryout this past weekend, and the results have everyone in the organization looking to the future.
With over seventy baseball players trying out, the Evansville organization was able to see some great young talent and the team signed two of the players to professional contracts on Monday.
LHP Patrick Crider and INF Zack Stanton stood out in the various exercises and both now have the opportunity to play professional baseball following an impressive tryout.
"We scheduled the tryout camp for the weekend after the draft hoping to attract good players who were overlooked," said Evansville Otters owner Bill Bussing. "To find two players from an open tryout is significant."
The tryout was planned months in advance by the Evansville Otters in hopes of finding some of the best players that the Major League Baseball Draft may have missed.
Kevin Cope, the Otters' Director of Player Personal was very pleased with the first tryout of its kind.
"We had a great tryout and to come up with 2 players out of 70 total makes me happy," said Kevin. "We were not sure what to expect after the Draft, but we are very happy with the results."
Patrick Crider, the Owensboro, Kentucky native, did not have to travel far to try out. The pitcher threw in 12 games last year for Brescia, going 6-4 on the season with a 3.54 ERA. The lefty pitched very effectively as he had 90 strikeouts in just 68 2/3 innings.
Zack Stanton also had a very impressive college season as the Marietta, GA ballplayer hit .324 at Georgia Southwestern State. There, Stanton hit six home runs and 50 runs batted in. The infielder also displayed excellent speed with 14 stolen bases in 16 attempts.
The tryout also has the Evansville Otters thinking about future chances to witness talented young players, both in Evansville and elsewhere.
"We plan to host more," said Bill Bussing, "perhaps in the offseason and maybe at various locations around the country."
