Southern Illinois Miners News Release
MARION, Ill. - Southern Illinois extended their winning streak to seven games with a 6-2 win against River City Tuesday night. Eric Fussell picked up his third win of the year, while Gary Moran was handed his second loss of the season. Former Saluki, Michael Stalter singled twice, scored the go-ahead run and stole a base in his professional debut at shortstop for the Miners.
Eric Fussell worked six strong innings, allowed two runs on six hits and tied a career-high with seven strikeouts. Fussell struck out a River City batter in each of the six innings he pitched Tuesday night. The damage on the right-hander came in the third and fourth innings when the Rascals were able to scratch a run across in each frame.
Gary Moran was pitch-for-pitch with Fussell for most of the night, as he allowed two earned runs on six hits, and added five strikeouts through five-plus innings. Like Fussell, he struck out a batter an inning through his first five. Moran allowed two first-inning runs on a Todd Martin single.
Frontier League MVP Joey Metropolous was placed on the disabled list prior to the game with a sore shoulder. Brad Miller was activated from the disabled list to take his place. He went 0-for-4 in his season debut.
Jereme Milons had another two-hit game, which is his seventh multiple hit game in his last eight. He also added two more stolen bases, giving him a total of 14 on the season in 15 attempts.
Third baseman Nate Hall left in the third inning with a strained left shoulder. However, Will Block filled in admirably at third base. It was his first action of the season at the hot corner and only his second appearance at third in his career.
Joe Augustine (4-0) will be on the mound Wednesday in search of his fifth victory against righty Josh Lowey (2-1, 3.57) for a 7:05 p.m. first pitch. The Miners will be seeking their eighth straight win, which would match the second longest streak in team history. Southern Illinois is 5-0 against River City this season, and Wednesday will be the Rascals final game at Rent One Park in 2010.
