Evansville Otters News Release

Ypsilanti, MI - The Otters turned a 3-2 ninth inning deficit into a 5-3 win Tuesday night in Ypsilanti, Michigan, sending the Midwest Sliders to their fifth loss in the last six games.

Luke Hetherington led off the ninth with a single and advanced to third on Frank Meade's double. Travis McCleary, signed Monday, walked to load the bases with no one out. Matt Schneider hit a sharp groundball into right field to score Hetherington and Meade and put the Otters up 4-3. Andre Liscinsky added another run with a two out single that plated McCleary.

Otters' closer Justin Smith retired the first two batters of the ninth before walking Bryan Bonner and hitting Lee Rubin with a pitch. At that point manager Wayne Krenchicki removed Smith and brought in Ben Paxton, who had thrown all of one warm-up pitch in the bullpen. Paxton struggled to find his command initially, walking the first batter he faced to the load the bases and put the tying run in scoring position. He recovered though, and induced a ground ball to first off the bat of Johnnie Knoble to end the game. It was the first professional save of Paxton's career.

John Ducey (3-7) earned the win after throwing eight solid innings. He allowed three runs (all earned) on six hits while striking out four and walking one. Sliders' closer Arshwin Asjes (1-2) took the loss, giving up three earned runs in the ninth inning. Midwest's starter Mike Penn took a no-decision after surrendering only one earned run in seven innings. At one point he retired fifteen straight batters.

The Otters (24-49) will look to take game two of the three game series Wednesday at 6:05pm CDT.
