Traverse City Beach Bums News Release
TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. - David Nathanson hurled his third complete game of the season as the Traverse City Beach Bums knocked off the Gateway Grizzlies 8-3 in the opener of a series on Tuesday night.
Nathanson tossed 106 pitches and allowed three runs while establishing a career high with 10 strikeouts to match the Beach Bums single game record. Gateway scored a run with two outs against Nathanson in the first inning to strike first. Joseph Scaperotta doubled to right center, moved to third on a single by Breck Draper and scored on a wild pitch.
Traverse City scored two runs in the third inning to take the lead against Gateway starter Mark Brackman. Mike Epping singled and stole second with one away. He moved to third on a groundout and scored on a throwing error when Michael Campbell escaped a rundown between first and second. Campbell moved to third on the error and scored on a single by Mike Victor.
Gateway took a 3-2 lead in the seventh inning despite some base running mistakes. Jareck West was hit by a pitch and was caught stealing as he attempted to break before a pitch. Brandon Johnson doubled but was thrown out a third trying to move up on a grounder. Nate Lape tied the game with a double to deep center, and Peter Tountas put the Grizzlies in front with a double to left for his first professional RBI.
Six runs came home for the Beach Bums in the bottom of the inning though as Traverse City matched the highest single inning output this season. Mike Epping began the inning with a bunt single, stole second and went to third on a throwing error. Andrew Franco walked and Michael Campbell singled him home and an error moved the runners to second and third. John Alonso drove in two runs with a single up the middle and Robby Alcombrack capped the inning with a three-run homer, his eighth of the season to tie him for the team lead.
The Beach Bums posted 12 hits in the game. Mike Epping, Andrew Franco, Michael Campbell, John Alonso, and Robby Alcombrack all had two hits. Alcombrack drove in three and Alonso drove home a pair while Epping stole two bases to up his total to 36 on the season, two shy of his single season record set last year.
Traverse City will continue the series with the Grizzlies tomorrow night. RHP David Dinelli (1-4, 7.03) will take to the mound for the Beach Bums while RHP Christian Castorri (1-1, 5.87) takes the ball for Gateway. The game is scheduled for a 7:05 pm first pitch and will feature a Beach Bums Trading Card giveaway.
